Old Oak Outdoor Learning Center Dedication

Posted On: Thursday, September 16, 2010
For more than 40 years, Dare Elementary School children, parents and teachers have gathered, played and learned under the branches of the enormous live oak tree that graces the entry to the school. This tree, loved by many, was the inspiration for the creation of the Old Oak Outdoor Learning Center. In 2009, Kathryn Callaway, a second grade teacher and Earth Kids Leader at Dare, applied for and received a Lowes' Outdoor Education Grant. With help from volunteers, Earth Kids’, Dare PTA and staff members, the Old Oak Outdoor Learning Center has become a reality complete with benches, picnic tables, planters, bird feeders, bird bath and a birdhouse. DES held a dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony on September 9. Principal Dick Carter cut the ribbon. Dr. Eric Williams was in attendance, along with community members and volunteers, who helped make the Old Oak Outdoor Learning Center a reality.
