KidWind National Champions

Posted On: Tuesday, June 20, 2023

group of students standing behind their projectTabb High School students recently returned from Boulder, Colorado celebrating their accomplishments at the National KidWind Challenge. The THS Windbreakers (Dante Keil, Claire Chang, Joshua Namkoong, Gavin Bowden, Matthew Andrews, and Shugo Mori) was named this year’s National Champions in the High School Age Division (grades 9-12). If the team and students' names sound familiar – that's because they won last year's competition as well! Tabb's "Gone with the Wind" Team (Kyle Ray, Alice Fang, Katelyn Wiltz and Jacoby Melton) won the Kidwind/Trane Data Analytic G.O.A.T. Award from Trane Industries.

Team scores are based on performance in five tasks over the three-day event. Teams test their wind turbine's performance and energy output in four KidWind wind tunnels each operating at different speeds. They then present their design choices, challenges, and successes to the judges. To further test their knowledge and skill, teams participate in a renewable energy Quiz Bowl, a fixed bottom offshore wind instant challenge, and a Data Analysis challenge by industry leaders.

Our Tabb teams competed against 60 teams from across the county.
