Owl Rescued from Soccer Net

Posted On: Friday, April 30, 2010
Yorktown Elementary School teacher Lydia Lassalle discovered an owl entangled in the soccer net when she took her class outside for recess. She quickly called on fourth grade teacher Jorj Head for assistance. Head, who is an experienced outdoorsman, was able to remove the owl from the net. He and Lassalle painstakingly cut away the remaining net that entwined the owl's wings and talons. An animal removal specialist was called and everyone thought that the owl would have to be taken to the vet. However, Head released the owl and it flew away above the trees. The two teachers turned the rescue into an impromptu science lesson and a parent volunteer was on hand to videotape and photograph the entire rescue.
