2022 Magnet Program Informational Sessions

The York County School Division provides unique learning opportunities for student learning through its multiple magnet school programs located at Waller Mill and Yorktown Elementary and Queens Lake Middle Schools. The Waller Mill Fine Arts Magnet School provides students in grades 1–5 with enriched instruction in choral music, exploratory instrumental music, drama, visual arts and dance. The Yorktown Elementary Magnet School provides students in grades 1–5 with enriched instructional opportunities with an emphasis on scientific inquiry, mathematical problem solving, and the engineering design process.

The Queens Lake Middle School Arts Magnet provides enrichment and instruction in literary, theatre, and dance arts. Applications for the magnet school programs are available in each elementary and middle school main office, school board office and on the YCSD website. Each year, schools hold informational sessions for elementary and middle school magnet programs. These sessions are designed to provide an overview of the programs so that families and students make informed decisions about the application process. The locations, dates and times for the information sessions can be found on the division website.

Kindergarten Registration

Any child who is five years old on or before September 30, 2022 may attend kindergarten next school year. Kindergarten registration will begin on May 2. The first step in the registration process includes the completion of an online pre-registration form. Once the online pre-registration form is submitted, families should schedule an appointment with the registrar at their child’s zoned school to complete the registration process in-person and provide required documentation. Each elementary school will host an open house to share an overview of the kindergarten program and assist parents with the registration process. VDOE History and Social Science (HSS) SOL Review & Revision Update

On February 22, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) released an update on the review and revision process of the 2015 HSS Standards of Learning. VDOE continues to gather input from stakeholders and begin the finalization of the proposed document for the new Standards. A Steering Committee, working collaboratively with the Humanities Department, established a vision for the future of HSS instruction in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the development of new Standards of Learning. The proposed 2022 HSS Standards of Learning are slated to go to the Virginia Board of Education for first review in July and final approval in the fall.

The York County School Division offers local businesses and organizations the opportunity to share information with students and parents regarding educational/enrichment activities, events and opportunities, which are either available to YCSD students or support division programs. These flyers are neither sponsored nor endorsed by the York County School Division or the schools, but are made available as a community service for our families.
