2021 Graduation Update!

Governor Northam has amended the executive order limiting attendance at outdoor graduation ceremonies to allow up 50% of the venue’s capacity. Therefore, we are pleased to share that graduates will now receive eight (8) tickets for the commencement ceremonies in June. Spectators will still need to adhere to all mitigation strategies and state requirements in place the day of the ceremonies.

2021-22 School Year Virtual Learning

As we have shared previously, the division is planning to begin the 2021-22 school year on August 30 with students learning in person, five days a week. Throughout this current school year, we have worked diligently towards that goal, as we believe students’ educational needs are best met in the classroom with their teachers and peers. However, we understand that some families may need to continue with a virtual learning option due to the uncertainties and variables surrounding COVID-19.

During the April monthly School Board meeting, YCSD Chief Academic Officer Candi Skinner presented the board with an overview of the plans for an application-based K-12 virtual instruction program for the 2021-22 school year. Information sessions for both elementary and secondary families will take place on April 29 and May 4 (see details below). Additional details regarding the program, eligibility criteria, and the application process will be reviewed during these virtual events. Families considering virtual learning for their children are encouraged to attend a session prior to applying for the program. Additional information is also available on the division website.

Only those students seeking entry into the virtual learning program need to take action. Students who are returning to in-person learning for fall 2021 do not need to do anything further to declare that intent.

2021-22 Middle School Arts Magnet (mSAM) Program

Summer Academy (June 28-July 28)

In-person summer academic programs for grades K-8 will resume this summer along with the high school Virtual Academy for credit recovery and original high school credit courses. Schools will notify families by the end of May if a student has been recommended to participate based on the student’s academic need. Families can also request to be placed on a waiting list if they wish to have their child attend the K-8 summer academy. The division is also pleased to announce a new addition to summer offerings in the form of limited high-interest summer camps. Details about these offerings will be posted online and sent home with students in the near future.

School Events

The division continues to adhere to state and federal guidance regarding events scheduled to take place on school grounds. The traditional elementary school promotion and recognition programs will be held at each school site during the school day this year. Families may have the option to participate virtually as students are recognized for their academic achievements. If you have questions, you can contact your child’s school administration.
