group of students holding trophyHuge shout out to Tabb Middle School's Wind Turbine Team, Gone With the Wind, on bringing home a national championship from the 2019 KidWind Competition in Houston, Texas!!! The competition included middle and high school students from 36 states. TMS students competed against 52 other middle school teams. Alice Fang, Jacoby Melton, Kyle Ray, and Katelyn Wiltz, took 1st place as National Champions and received a Power Output Champion award for producing so much power.

The competition has various aspects that are calculated into the final scores. The students are judged on the efficiency of their wind turbines but also must present their designs and data and how their team progressed using the engineering design process. There were two instant challenges where students had to work as a team to complete tasks, as well as, a knowledge quiz that tested what they know about renewable energy in the U.S. and other leading countries around the world. The TMS team impressed the judges with their presentation and through the efficiency of their design which produced twice as much power as the other teams in their division. These students worked closely with high school mentor, Daniel Taminger, as well as Dr. James Stephenson, an engineer from NASA, who devoted his free time to support the school's STEM program.
