2018-19 Calendar Adjustment

Posted On: Wednesday, September 26, 2018

The York County School Division has made an adjustment to the 2018-19 school calendar to address the school closings due to the mandatory evacuation order for Hurricane Florence. Wednesday, December 19, will be extended from an early release day to a full school day. A portion of the division’s banked time will also be used to offset the missed days. Banked time is "instructional time built into the school calendar that exceeds the 990 instructional hour minimum."

While waivers from mandatory calendar requirements can be requested after a declared state of emergency, YCSD does not currently qualify for a waiver as the Code of Virginia states that the school division must first:

".. include evidence of efforts that have been made by the school division to reschedule as many days as possible and certification by the division superintendent and chairman of the local school board that every reasonable effort for making up lost teaching days or teaching hours was exhausted before requesting a waiver of this requirement."

If the division experiences additional school closings, as has happened during winter months in recent years, additional schedule adjustments may be made using identified early release days, teacher workdays and student holidays.
