Students from each elementary school in the division took over the kitchen at York High School on March 30 for the Sodexo Future Chefs Culinary Competition. The national initiative, which is in its seventh year, was launched to get students thinking about making healthy food choices while also encouraging them to get active and creative in the kitchen.
The cooking challenge began with hundreds of YCSD elementary students submitting healthy comfort food recipes. Ten students were then selected to participate in the division’s final event. With the help of cafeteria managers, the students prepared their recipes for a panel of judges that included School Board member Mark Medford, Division Superintendent Victor Shandor and Chief Operations Officer Carl James.
The judges selected macaroni muffins, created by Grafton Bethel Elementary School fifth grader Mason Gay, as the winning dish.
