Yorktown Elementary School Magnet Night

Posted On: Friday, May 06, 2016

More than 200 students and parents attended Yorktown Elementary School’s annual Math, Science, & Technology Magnet Night this month. Participants included the Virginia Institute for Marine Science (VIMS), Mad Science, physics experts from the College of William and Mary, and Bayport Credit Union. The organizations shared exhibits and activities designed for each grade level to increase understanding and enthusiasm in the fields of math, science, and technology, as well as improve critical thinking and collaboration skills.

Students in second and third grades were tasked with Cookie Mining to remove all of the chocolate chips from a cookie without damaging them. In addition, students had the opportunity to visit the Star Lab with their families and share all that they had learned about the constellations during their visit with their class earlier in the week. Classroom teachers were there to help students share their work on transformative learning activities and project-based learning projects. Projects included student published books, research presentations on the effects of coal ash waste in the James River, and STEM houses created to withstand the wind of the Big Bad Wolf from Three Little Pigs.
