Carol Bauer, who teaches fourth grade at Grafton Bethel Elementary School, has been named the recipient of the 2016 Virginia Education Association (VEA) Award for Teaching Excellence. The award, the highest offered by the VEA, recognizes educators whose professional practice and advocacy for the profession are exemplary.

Carol joined YCSD in 1996 and was named the Grafton Bethel Elementary School Teacher of the Year in 2015. In addition to challenging her students on a daily basis, she serves as sponsor for the Battle of Book and coach of the Great Grizzlies Lego team. She has helped mentor fellow teachers through the rigorous National Board Certification process. She’s also been part of the York Education Association at every level, serving as a local president, a member of the VEA Board of Directors, and as one of Virginia’s representatives on the National Education Association (NEA) Board of Directors.

She will receive a plaque, a cash award of $500, and she will compete, as Virginia’s nominee, for the NEA Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence and its $25,000 prize.
