Virginia's First Lady Tours YCSD Schools

Posted On: Friday, February 19, 2016

Dorothy McAuliffe, wife of Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, visited two York County School Division schools on February 19. She started the day touring Tabb Elementary School with Superintendent Victor Shandor and members of the York County School Board to learn more about the school’s Breakfast in the Classroom program, which the school first implemented in 2006. As first lady of the Commonwealth, McAuliffe has dedicated her efforts to eliminating childhood hunger in partnership with the No Child Hungry Virginia campaign.

She also participated in a ceremony celebrating Bethel Manor Elementary School’s (BMES) designation as a National Title I Distinguished School, along with Dr. Steven Staples, superintendent of public instruction for Virginia. McAuliffe told the students and staff that they have made the Commonwealth, the governor and their community proud. Dr. Staples, who is also a former YCSD superintendent, remarked on how special BMES is for being able to develop strong school-parent partnerships in a community that faces above-average student transitions due to its 100% military-impacted enrollment.
