On Tuesday, October 20, Madame Kaufmann-Perry's French 1 and 2 students met their French pen pals from the French American School of Norfolk, Virginia. The native French students presented a PowerPoint to explain their perspective regarding the victory at Yorktown or Yorktown Day. YMS French 1 students introduced themselves in French. French 2 students did the same, but also asked two questions about the visitors, two about Yorktown Day, and one about a topic of their choice. Students selected a yearlong pen pal to exchange ‘slow’ mail letters, as well as communicate via a blog created by Monsieur Gregory, the French teacher of the French American School of Norfolk. Those assembled, including teachers and chaperones from the French American School, shared baguette and Orangina, a sparkling orange drink. Monsier Gregory commented, "It has been a pleasure for us to see the students connecting, shyly first, and then warmly exchanging as well as they could in both French and English. On our side-and on yours, I am quite sure-we believe in such exchanges that bring the students more motivation in their language learning and the knowledge of different cultures."
