STEM Students Take Honors

Posted On: Friday, March 28, 2014

Members of the Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) after-school STEM Club have good reason to be proud. The students participated in a KidWind Competition in Virginia Beach earlier this month. The event challenged students to explore the development of wind energy by having them design and construct their own wind turbines. These handmade turbines were then tested for efficiency and power within a portable wind tunnel and judged accordingly. Students also had to have extensive background knowledge on wind energy to answer questions against a panel of judges.

While the challenge was designated for middle school and high school teams, students in grades 4 and 5 were also allowed to participate. The MVES team placed 4th in a competition against middle school students.
