York High School Marching Band Competes

The York High School Marching Band competed in the Annual Warhill Classic Band Competition. The York High School Marching Band won first place in the following captions: Drum Major, Percussion, Music, Marching and General Effect. The York Marching Band was recognized as the top overall marching band at the competition, earning first place A Band Division, as well as first place overall for the Blue Division.


Federal Impact Aid Survey Cards

Federal Impact Aid survey cards will be sent home with students the week of October 14th. Impact Aid is a federal program that provides assistance to local school districts with military-dependent students. By filling out and returning these surveys, parents help our schools claim and benefit from the district's authorized share of federal support. Each signed and completed survey is critical to ensuring that YCSD continues to receive federal Impact Aid funding which supports, in part, teacher salaries, textbooks and other instructional materials. Forms should be returned to the school the day after the forms are sent home.


Tabb DECA Attends DECA Day at the State Fair

Tabb High School DECA members attended the annual DECA Day at the Virginia State Fair at Meadow Event Park on October 2, 2013. Members participated in the Educational Expo, networked with DECA members from across the state and had fun doing it.


Yorktown Middle's Field Hockey Team Tournament Champions

Yorktown Middle School (YMS) hosted, and won, the inaugural Yorktown Invitational Field Hockey Tournament the first weekend in October. The Falcons defeated teams from Tabb, Toano, Berkeley, Hornsby and Peasley in a total team win.


STEM Grants at Tabb High School

The Tidewater Chapter of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Director Ed Crosby presented a $3,000 grant to Commander Gary Wooten for the Cyber Patriot Team and Mrs. Joyce Kuberek’s Weather Balloon project.


Tabb Middle School Chain Reactions Members' Training

The newest members of the Tabb Middle School (TMS) Chain Reactions Organization prepared for training during a recent meeting. Chain Reactions consists of students in all grades at the school who seek to be a positive influence on the school climate. "Chain Links" assist with the sixth grade orientation each summer, and members also welcome new students to the school while giving tours, meeting them for lunch, and introducing them to other students. The most important role of each Chain Link is to take advantage of the limitless opportunities each day to notice others and to respond with care and kindness.


Statewide Officers Elected for Virginia Girls State

Ms. Courtney Taylor of Tabb High School (THS) was elected Governor of the 67th Session of the Virginia Girls State at the week-long summer program held at Longwood University in Farmville. Virginia Girls State is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary with the support of legislative staff from the General Assembly. Approximately 600 women who are rising high school seniors from across Virginia attended the session. The group is divided into fourteen cities and two political parties, the Federalists and the Nationalists. Party conventions were held to nominate candidates for statewide offices. Candidates delivered platform speeches, responded during a question and answer session, and campaigned prior to voting.


Yorktown Elementary School WatchDOG Pizza Night

Yorktown Elementary School (YES) hosted its Annual WatchDOGS (Dads of Great Students) pizza night, where students had the opportunity to interact with dads and other male role models while enjoying a slice of pizza. The informational meeting offered a glimpse into the program's goals and dads were able to sign up to volunteer at the school. WatchDOGS has become an integral part of the YES community and provides an avenue to increase the number of parent volunteers at school.


STEM Projects at Yorktown Elementary School

Students in Mrs. Barbara Westlund's second grade class at Yorktown Elementary School (YES) completed a STEM project where students had to create a scene that showed why they are unique. Students were given criteria to meet related to size, materials they could use, and the number of items that could be included in the project.


Johnny Appleseed's Birthday

Students at Seaford Elementary School (SES) celebrated Johnny Appleseed’s birthday in September in a variety of ways. Each child in Mrs. Elder's kindergarten class brought in an apple and the class sorted them by color.
