GHS Food Drive a Huge SuccessPosted on: Friday, December 12, 2014Grafton High School (GHS) students stepped up to the plate to support the Salvation Army Food Drive this year. The school's Student Council Association challenged classes to see who could collect the most donations in two weeks. In all, the school collected 2,695 food items! |
Stuff the BusPosted on: Friday, December 12, 2014The York High School (YHS) Leadership class began exploring opportunities to support local charities during the holidays earlier this year. They learned about Wes Pak, a Seaford Elementary School student who started a Toys for Tots drive for patients at CHKD, they launched a Stuff the Bus for Wes campaign. Wes was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in 2011 and launched the Toy drive after being treated at CHKD. On December 11, YHS students traveled to various schools to collect donations for the Wes Pak 4th Annual Toys for Tots drive. The students are thankful for the outpouring of support as they loaded hundreds of toys to present to Wes. |
BMES Families Celebrate Books!Posted on: Friday, December 05, 2014Barnes and Noble hosted the third annual Bethel Manor Elementary School (BMES) Book Fair with an evening of books, music and treats. Families were invited to hear second grade students perform "I Pick Rap," and teachers share their favorite books. They could also decorate bookmarks and cupcakes and listen to the performances of the fourth and fifth grade chorus. It was a great night filled with music, fun and books! |
York County School Board Office Gives BackPosted on: Friday, December 05, 2014The York County School Board Office (SBO) staff participated in several community-service projects for the holidays. An Angel Tree was set up at the SBO for employees to choose a tag and buy gifts for specific children. Some gifts contained games, dolls, balls, bottles, and clothing. Even a bicycle and fishing pole were placed under the tree! Employees could also participate in a Toys for Tots collection for the Wes Pak 4th Annual Toy Drive for children at CHKD, which concludes December 11. A food drive for the York-Poquoson Food Closet was held in November and a second food drive will take place December 8-18. |
Jamestown Outreach Comes to SESPosted on: Friday, December 05, 2014The Jamestown Settlement brought the museum to second grade classrooms at Seaford Elementary School (SES) recently. The students explored the Powhatan Native American culture by examining reproduction artifacts to learn how tools, clothing, food, and housing were produced. They also learned how these Virginia Indians used natural resources from the Eastern Woodland environment to meet their needs. |
BMES Page Turners Promote ReadingPosted on: Friday, December 05, 2014Page Turners, an after school club for fourth and fifth graders at Bethel Manor Elementary School (BMES), is working hard to create shelf talkers to promote books to all students in our school. Our Page Turners summarize favorite books, illustrate them, and include call numbers, so other students can quickly locate the books. Once their shelf talker is added to the shelf, that Page Turner adopts another shelf in the library. Page Turners is also celebrating a love of books with 12 Days of Reading! Each day during the school’s morning show, a Page Turner introduces a favorite picture book, and draws a name of a Lucky Listener. SES New Addition OpensPosted on: Thursday, December 04, 2014Students and staff at Seaford Elementary School (SES) are enjoying the six new classrooms that have been added to the building as part of the division’s Capital Improvements Program. York County School Board Chair Mark Medford, Division Superintendent Victor Shandor, Ed.D., York County Board of Supervisor Chair Don Wiggins and Principal Christina Head were joined by student representatives for the official ribbon-cutting. The new addition houses fourth grade classrooms along with classrooms for reading and speech. It also created room in the building for the art and music classrooms to be relocated into the main building from mobile units on campus. TMS First Lego League Team Receives Judges AwardPosted on: Friday, November 21, 2014Tabb Middle School’s (TMS) First Lego League (FLL) Team "Tigers A.I." received the Judges Award at the FLL VA-DC regional tournament in Newport News on November 8, recognizing the team for fantastic cooperation, gracious professionalism and all around positive spirit towards their project and robotic missions. The team spent eight weeks developing a question and solution for this year's topic "World Class." They decided to find out why people develop misconceptions like, "...all GMO's cause cancer..." or "...you catch a cold from being cold". They also created a "Validity Test" for anyone to use when encountering confusing information that should be further researched. Both the Project and Robot Missions were rigorous and rewarding. |
