YCSD Ranked Best in Teacher Support

The York County School Division has been ranked as one of the best school systems for teacher support in Virginia. Teacher.org ranked school districts in Virginia, and across the country, that excel in supporting teachers inside and outside of the classroom. Of the 130 Virginia school divisions analyzed, YCSD ranked 16th. School divisions were assessed on several factors, which represent how well a school district supports their teachers. Some criteria included: class size, administrator and support staff availability, and student proficiency levels.


SES Shows Student Support

The entire Seaford Elementary School (SES) student body and staff donned special t-shirts to show support for a fellow student suffering from cancer. Wes Pak, a fourth grade student at SES, was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma in 2011 and is now battling the disease for the fourth time. As a result of his diagnosis, Jedi Wes (as his family calls him) travels to New York frequently for treatment, missing school and school activities. The school does so much to keep Wes involved and a part of their community – from supporting his special Toy Drive for CHKD to assisting in fundraising events. This particular event was inspired by and realized thanks to an SES parent, Lauren Blanchard, who started a non-profit called Got CUREage. YCSD Teacher of the Year Selected

The York County School Division is proud to announce that Elizabeth O’Brien, a Yorktown Middle School math teacher, has been selected as the division’s Teacher of the Year. Elizabeth was one of three finalists for the honor and was surprised with the news at a special faculty meeting by the Teacher of the Year prize patrol. DES Students and Staff Characters

Students and staff at Dare Elementary School (DES) have been truly getting into character and strutting their stuff this week. From a Storybook Character Parade to a Vocabulary Parade, the school has been full of interesting characters. For the Vocabulary Parade, third through fifth grades selected a word and dressed up to explain the definition.


Comparing and Contrasting

Second graders in Lydia Hoffman’s class at Yorktown Elementary School have been studying colors. As part of their lesson, the class studied works by VanGogh, O'Keefe and Gauguin and compared and contrasted how they used color in their artwork. The students then created their own artwork and wrote a comparative analysis between the styles of two artists.


Future Chefs Competition

Students from each elementary school in the division took over the kitchen at York High School on March 31 for the Sodexo Future Chefs Culinary Competition. The national initiative, which is in its sixth year, was launched to get students thinking about making healthy food choices while also encouraging them to get active and creative in the kitchen. The cooking challenge began with 250 YCSD elementary students submitting healthy breakfast recipes. Ten students were then selected to participate in the division final event. With the help of cafeteria managers, the students prepared their recipes for a panel of judges that included School Board members Barbara Haywood, Page Minter, and Mark Medford, as well as Division Superintendent Victor Shandor and Chief Operations Officer Carl James.


YCSD Teachers of the Year Finalists Announced

York County School Division (YCSD) administrators, members of the York Foundation for Public Education, and representatives from TowneBank surprised three teachers in their classrooms as they announced the finalists for the YCSD TowneBank Teacher of the Year. Congratulations to Tracy Buckley (Mt. Vernon Elementary School), Elizabeth O’Brien (Yorktown Middle School), and Lyndsay Kimbro (Bruton High School). The Teacher of the Year prize patrol, sponsored by TowneBank, included Superintendent Victor Shandor, Chief Academic Officer Stephanie Guy, Education Foundation board members Larry and Cathy Cheney, TowneBank President Brian Skinner and TowneBank Vice-President Sandra Allen. YMS and MVES Battle of the Books

Yorktown Middle School (YMS) and Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) represented the York Library at the regional Battle of the Books competition held at the Williamsburg Regional Library on March 19. Students competed against teams from Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg. MVES brought home the championship trophy for grades 4-5 division for the second consecutive year. YMS advanced to the final round as well, finishing with seconds place in the grades 6-8 division.


YCSD Teams Headed to State Odyssey of the Mind Tournament

Two York County School Division teams are headed to the state Odyssey of the Mind Tournament after taking first place at the regional competition, held at the Grafton School Complex on March 19. The Yorktown Middle School team took first place in the Furs, Fins, Feathers and Friends problem, while Magruder Elementary School's team took first place in the Something Fishy problem. Several other YCSD teams earned honors at the regional competition. The state tournament will be held at Menchville High School in Newport News on April 16. Teams that place first and second at the state tournament will advance to the World Finals competition at Iowa State University in late May.


MVES and TMS Students Celebrate Read Across America

Tabb Middle School (TMS) students recently visited Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) for a special Read Across America Event. The middle school students were matched with classes and spent time reading to the elementary students. It was an extra special visit as just about all of the TMS students were once Mt. Vernon Mustangs.
