Waller Mill Students PAWS to Read

Waller Mill Elementary School students attended a reading night celebration with their families so that they could PAWS to read. Students enjoyed a PAW themed evening of activities revolving around reading. Volunteer therapy dogs attended to listen to students read aloud and students made dog biscuits to donate to the local animal shelter. "Furry books" were created for students to journal in and they took turns reading in cozy "doggy beds" with their favorite books.

Waller Mill Elementary School second grade student Gabrielle Burge along with Yan Haux, Chinese teacher at the College of William and Mary and graduate student shared Chinese culture and the celebration of the Chinese New Year.


100th Day of School

Waller Mill Elementary School Principal Jennifer Goodwin, along with students, welcomed the 100th day of school. The students celebrated this accomplishment in various instructional ways including reading, writing, math and arts integration.


Taking Care of Your Family Inside and Out

The annual York County Health Fair/D.A.R.E. Fest will be held on Saturday, March 6, 2010 from 10 AM to 2 PM at the Grafton School Complex. There will be over 50 vendors featured under one roof. Exhibitions will include demonstrations, massages, eye exams, glucose testing, skin evaluations, education on nutrition, exercise and diseases and much more. There will also be lots of food and fun for the kids. You just can't miss this great community event. “Come for the HEALTH of it!"


York Foundation for Public Education Donates Funds to the Committee for Minority Affairs

The Committee for Minority Affairs (CFMA) is pleased to announce that the York Foundation for Public Education (YFPE) has continued their strong support for the educational advancement of minority youth in the York County School Division. The YFPE has generously donated sufficient funds to provide a scholarship to each high school, including York River Academy, to support the post-secondary education of a nominated minority student. Together, we continue to build a strong educational foundation for all York County youth and support students in achieving their full potential.

Yorktown Elementary Hosts Sock Hop

The PTA’S annual sock hop at the Yorktown Elementary School featured a visit from the “King”, Elvis Presley, Assistant Principal Kevin Goetz. The event offers concessions and a 50’s band. Students, families and staff participated by dressing in leather, poodle skirts, bobbie socks and saddle shoes.


York County Student Helps With Coat Drive

Jessi Volkers, an eighth grade student at Yorktown Middle School, volunteered at the Hampton Roads Harley Davidson store assisting with their annual coat drive. The store collected 655 jackets to be donated to the local shelters of Newport News. Monica Whitmore, Operations Manager at the Harley Davidson store said, “It is young people like Jessi that make a true difference in our community.”
