Builders Club Receives Official Charter

Members of the Grafton Kiwanis Club visited Yorktown Middle School (YMS) to present the YMS Builders Club with its official charter. Currently in its inaugural year at YMS, the Builder's Club is a national service organization for middle school students sponsored by the Kiwanis. Around the world Builders Club members work to develop leadership skills while working with friends to help others in need. Over the course of the 2009-2010 school year, YMS Builders Club members have held a food drive, made cards for residents of local nursing homes, made and sold bracelets to raise money to support the Red Cross earthquake relief efforts and conducted numerous projects to benefit the YMS school community.


Coventry Celebrates Art

The Coventry Elementary Cougar Community enjoyed an evening of fun celebrating the arts and recognizing the many volunteers. The activities included “Art After Dark” which displayed art creations made by each student, a volunteer reception and the 2nd Annual Coventry Elementary School Student Talent Show!


YCSD Announces Teachers of the Year

The Teacher of the Year prize patrol surprised those teachers who were selected as the level teachers of the year for the York County School Division (YCSD). Gordon Parr, Tabb High School was selected as the YCSD’s Teacher of the Year and as the high school Teacher of the Year. Kathy Faron, Grafton Middle School was selected at middle school Teacher of the Year and Katie Gaylord, Waller Mill Elementary School was chosen as elementary Teacher of the Year. Congratulations to all the winners!


YFPE Grants to Odyssey of the Mind

The three team sponsors of the YCSD Odyssey of the Mind state champions received grants from the York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. (YFPE). Grafton High, Dare Elementary and Yorktown Middle received $1,000 each to assist the Odyssey of the Mind teams with travel expenses to the World Odyssey of the Mind competition in East Lansing, Michigan in May.

Odyssey of the Mind Teams from Grafton High School, Yorktown Middle School and Dare Elementary School won first place at the state competition which was held in March 2010. These teams are now eligible to compete in the World Finals which will be held in East Lansing, Michigan in May.


YFPE Announces 2010 YCSD Scholarship Winners

The York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. (YFPE) granted eleven scholarships to seven teachers and four Para-Educators of the York County School Division. The individual recipients will receive monetary awards to be used for continued professional development and education. YFPE Liaison Peggy Myatt and YFPE board members, Dr. Catherine Jones and Tricia Biagas visited each individual recipient at their school.


Waller Mill Elementary Collects Pennies for Peace

Greg Mortenson, founder of Pennies for Peace, co-authored Three Cups of Tea, the story that inspired him to build schools for the children of Pakistan and Afghanistan. His dedication to building literacy and peace, one child at a time, has lead to the building of more than sixty schools to date. Students at Waller Mill heard his story and how a single penny can buy a pencil for children. Students collected pennies for this program and a school wide celebration was held. Students counted and rolled pennies together and shared tea.


Colonial Days at Waller Mill Elementary

Fifth grade students wrapped up their Colonial unit with a day of Colonial life experiences at Waller Mill Elementary School. Students shared colonial foods, participated in a colonial town hall meeting and enjoyed a presentation by members of the Williamsburg Colonial Fife and Drum.


Langley Names Science Teacher of the Year

Tabb High School's Advance Placement Biology teacher, Karen Mayeaux was selected by the Air Force Association's Langley Chapter as the 2010 Science Teacher of the Year. Ms. Mayeaux will be honored at the Association’s luncheon in June and be presented with a $750 award.


YCSD Bus Technician Wins First Annual Contest

The Virginia Association of Pupil Transportation (VAPT) has named Richard White as first place winner in the association’s first annual Virginia’s Best School Bus Technician competition. Seven Virginia public school districts took part in the competition that consisted of both a school bus technical knowledge written exam and a hands on diagnostic and trouble shooting exercise. Mr. White received a trophy and a cash award of $100 and will represent Virginia at the National Association for Pupil Transportation School Bus Technician’s Training and Skills competition taking place July 2010 in Jasper, Indiana in either the School Bus Technician or School Bus Inspector category.
