Novelty Stimulates Curiosity at Grafton Middle

Mary Pat Gallagher, a teacher at Grafton Middle School (GMS), was awarded a $400.00 Innovative Instructional Grant from the York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. Her students will benefit from the addition of a variety of sensory equipment items to support their sensory needs.


Superior Tabb Tiger Marching Band

Congratulations to all members of the Tabb High School Tabb Tiger Marching Band for receiving a "Superior" rating at the 2010 Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association (VBODA): State Marching Assessment held on October 30th at Warhill High School in Williamsburg, Virginia. A “Superior” rating is the highest rating presented. This is the first time since 1995 that the Tabb Tiger Marching Band has received this honor. This rating qualifies them to compete at the VBODA: Concert Band Assessment in March, 2011 for the title of 2010-2011 Virginia Honor Band - the top honor awarded to band programs in the state of Virginia.


YES Principals Sport School Colors in Race for Education

Principal Michael Lombardo and Assistant Principal Kevin Goetz dyed their hair blue and green to support the Yorktown Elementary School (YES) Race for Education. Students collected pledges and participated in the race on Friday, November 5. The race took place on the Big Green at YES and included events such as walking backward, skipping and hopping. Students, parents and teachers participated in the school wide event.


THS Celebrates DECA Day

November 9th was DECA Day at Tabb High School (THS) and across the state. DECA, an association of marketing students, is the co-curricular student organization for the Fashion, Sports and General Marketing programs. Each year in November, students ramp up their efforts to bring recognition to the club and its activities. This year members wore their We Run DECA t-shirts and sponsored a DECA trivia contest and ice cream social.


TES Science Class Models the Earth

Students in LaVerne Day's science class at Tabb Elementary School (TES) enjoyed using clay to make a model of the layers of the Earth. While they worked, they listened to a hip-hop song from Rhythm, Rhyme, Results! The lyrics of the song detail the make up of the layers of the Earth. After completing their models, the students sliced open their mini earths to reveal the earth’s layers.


GBES Lego Team Wins at Regional Competition

The Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) Lego Team won the VA-DC Newport News Regional championship on Saturday, November 6th, and will advance to the state championships on December 4th and 5th in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Team members are: Bryce Graca, Ethan Constantino, Jasmine Patel, Lexi Christie, Sami Wanderer, Shane Dunn, Gaby DiGangi, Timothy Asher, Brayden Hodges and Gage Mazaika. The GBES Lego Team coaches are Steve Bauer, Dillon Wilbert, Carol Bauer and Carol McKisson.


QLMS District Chorus Selections

Congratulations to the following Queens Lake Middle School (QLMS) students for making District Chorus: Noah Stoner, Julia Bryant, Mullin Evans and Madison Engstrom. In February, the group will sing as part of a 192 student choir.

Congratulations to the following Queens Lake Middle School (QLMS) students have been selected as members of the QLMS Jazz Band for the 2010-2011 school year – Saxophone: Joey Morrow, Tori McCurdy, Lydia Gentry, Michael Milligan and Dominique Coppock; Trumpet: Alberto Boites, Mason Farley, Reilly Kartchner, Nathan Dingman and Zachary Brown; Trombone: Isaiah Williams, Karif McCoy, Tyler Webb and Wyatt Baldasare; Lead Guitar: Alex Norris; Bass Guitar: Luther Millison; Piano: Jimmy McKenzie; and Drum Set: Isaiah Williams and Matthew Carlton.


Reading with a Hero at SES

Captain Jimmy Richardson of the York County Sherriff's Department read to 5th grade students at Seaford Elementary School (SES) during Read Aloud Virginia. Other local heroes from the Sherriff's office and Fire Department also participated in this event.


Green Gurus at YES

Yorktown Elementary School (YES) students attended a camp this past summer held at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS). During the week long program, entitled Green Gurus, students participated in a number of activities and projects surrounding recycling, stewardship and community service that would benefit the Chesapeake Bay. One of these projects was to decorate a recycling bin. VIMS donated the painted recycling bin to YES to encourage conservation and promote programs dedicated to saving the bay.
