Tigers Against Bullying BehaviorPosted on: Thursday, December 09, 2010Tabb Middle School (TMS) recently kicked-off their new TABB Program - Tigers against Bullying Behavior. All TMS students attended a grade-level assembly conducted by school staff to discuss the topics of bullying and cyber bullying. The TMS Student Council Association is selling “Stop Bullying” bracelets to students so that they can show their support of the TABB Program. In addition, monthly classroom discussions are planned to maintain the focus on promoting a bully-free environment at school and within the community. |
15th Annual QLMS Science Fair WinnersPosted on: Thursday, December 09, 2010The 15th Annual Queens Lake Middle School (QLMS) science fair was held at the school on December 8th. First, second and third place winners and students receiving honorable mention will advance to the division-level science fair to be held at the Grafton School Complex on January 29th. CES 2011 Year of Innovation Art WinnersPosted on: Thursday, December 09, 2010The 2011 Year of Innovation contest was open to all public and private schools in the Hampton Roads area. First place winners will have their artwork and picture in the NASA 2011 calendar. Coventry Elementary School (CES) had four students to place and two students to receive honorable mentions. The CES winners are: Jonathan Tyler, 5th grade - honorable mention; Kathryn Kelly, 4th grade - 1st place; Celeste Boseman, 3rd grade - 3rd place; Christopher Williams, 3rd Grade - 3rd place; Daniel Noble, 1st Grade- Honorable Mention; and Rebecca Basak, Kindergarten - 3rd place. |
THS Coca-Cola Scholarship SemifinalistPosted on: Thursday, December 09, 2010Austin Pierce, a student at Tabb High School (THS), has been named semifinalist for the 2011 Class of the Coca-Cola Scholars Program. He ranks with approximately 2,100 high school seniors who are in the running for $3 million in college scholarships that the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation will award in spring 2011. With the 2011 class, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation will have provided more than 4,700 young scholars nationwide with over $44 million in scholarships. Students are selected to advance to the next phase based on academic excellence, leadership and achievement demonstrated in school and community activities. As semi-finalists, students must submit additional information that will be reviewed in January 2011 by a committee comprised of 30 educators from high schools and universities throughout the United States. If advanced, Austin will be among 250 finalists who will travel to Atlanta April 14th to 17th to attend the Coca-Cola Scholars Weekend. During their visit, they will attend a final interview process that will determine whether they are designated as either a National or Regional Scholar. The 50 National Scholars will each receive a $20,000 scholarship award, while the Regional Scholars will receive a $10,000 scholarship. |
Streaming Earth SciencePosted on: Thursday, December 09, 2010Tabb High School (THS) earth science teacher, Richard Howell, built a stream table so that his students would better understand the processes of erosion, deposition, and the formation of sedimentary rocks. Students were immediately able to see that fine grained sediments settle out in the deep, still, water and coarse sediment in the faster flowing water. In this way, sedimentary rocks tell us about ancient environments. The table uses a common fountain pump to re-circulate water and a homemade filter to keep the system from becoming clogged. An adjustable drain allows students to see the effects of a changing sea level, just as on the real Earth. A local boat repair shop applied a coat of fiberglass for strength and waterproofing. |
TES SCA Food DrivePosted on: Thursday, December 09, 2010Thanks to the generosity of all of the students and their families, Tabb Elementary School (TES) was able to donate an entire van-load of non-perishable goods to the York-Poquoson County Food Closet. The Food Closet has experienced a greater need than usual this year and the donations will go a long way to help feed hungry families in York County and Poquoson. |
Food Collection at MESPosted on: Thursday, December 09, 2010Magruder Elementary School (MES) students and staff collected 1,024 pounds of food to help the local food bank over the holidays. MES students helped with sorting the food items after the collection. |
Seaford First Graders Visit the PastPosted on: Thursday, December 09, 2010Seaford Elementary School (SES) first grade students studied the past, present and future and had the opportunity to hear "living history" from Harry Johns, great-grandfather to students Dylan and Morgan Hunter. He spoke to the students about his life when he was their age. This real life presentation helped students grasp the differences between life today and life in the past. The first grade also had the opportunity to view a 1930 Model A Ford presented by Rick Morgan, Dylan and Morgan Hunter's grandfather. |
