Yorktown Middle School Hallway Dedicated To Former StudentPosted on: Thursday, February 24, 2011Sherman Hill, Chairman of the York County Black History Celebration Committee and member of the Yorktown African American Cultural Society, was honored by Yorktown Middle School (YMS) on Friday, February 18 during the school's African American History Assembly. Candi Skinner, Yorktown Middle School Principal, presented Mr. Hill with a plaque that dedicates a hallway in his name to honor him for his dedication to education. The hallway is in an original wing of the building where Mr. Hill attended James Weldon Johnson School (now Yorktown Middle School) from 1967 to 1970 and graduated from York High School as the schools integrated in 1971. |

Queens Lake holds its 1st Annual Spelling BeePosted on: Thursday, February 17, 2011Queens Lake Middle School (QLMS) had their 1st Annual Spelling Bell on Thursday, February 10th. The winner of the Spelling Bee was Kira Randolph and the four runners up were Brian Shartzer, Aimee Nazario-Orvalle, Jimmy McKenzie and Jacob Cook. These five students will represent our school when they compete in the Tidewater Scripps Spelling Bee on March 5th at the Hampton Roads Convention Center. This competition will be administered by the Hampton Library Society (HLS). |

Gifted Education Expert Coming to York CountyPosted on: Thursday, February 17, 2011On Friday, March 4, the York County School Division's (YCSD) Gifted Education Advisory Committee is hosting Dr. Mary Slade as she presents two staff development sessions for teachers and conducts a parent workshop that evening. Dr. Slade has taught elementary, middle and high school students. At the college level, she previously taught at both the University of Virginia (UVA) and at the College of William and Mary (W&M), and she is currently an assistant professor at James Madison University (JMU). She has served on the Board of Directors of the National Association for Gifted Children and she won an "early leader" award from that group several years ago. She has published more than 40 articles, book chapters and reports. She has also authored three books. |
House of Delegates Page ProgramPosted on: Thursday, February 17, 2011Borden Hayes, a Grafton Middle School (GMS) 8th grader served as a student page at this year's General Assembly in Richmond, Virginia where he was visited by GMS 8th grade Social Studies teachers, Julie Martin and Mary Beth Moss. Borden assisted members of the House of Delegates with daily duties. |
4th Annual TES Super Pancake BreakfastPosted on: Monday, February 14, 2011Despite the cold, soggy weather outside, members of Tabb Kiwanis Club held their 4th Super Pancake Breakfast fund raising event at Tabb Elementary School (TES) on February 5th. The Kiwanis Club of Tabb provided hot pancakes and crispy bacon for over 150 guests. Congressman Rob Wittman joined in making pancakes and meeting the TES community. This year proved to be the most successful Super Pancake Breakfast to date. Funds were raised from the event to benefit Tabb Elementary School and the surrounding community. A special thank you is extended to all of the TES community members who came out in support of the event. |
York High Senior Named Intel Science Talent Search 2011 Semi-FinalistPosted on: Monday, February 14, 2011Jessica Lee, York High School (YHS) senior, has been named a semi-finalist in the Intel Science Talent Search 2011 (IntelST). Jessica is one of only 300 students selected from 1,744 applicants to compete for a spot as one of forty finalists. The IntelSTS is a nation-wide science research competition open to high school seniors. The competition allows for young scientist to present their original scientific research to nationally recognized professional scientists. |
