Pink Shirt Day at York High

York High School (YHS) participated in Pink Shirt Day 2011 on Wednesday, February 23rd, sending a clear message that we will not tolerate bullying of any kind, to anyone. The YHS Gay-Straight Alliance and Peer Intervention Club co-sponsored the event, for which Anti-Bullying t-shirts were sold. Yorktown Elementary Teacher Recipient of First Annual YFPE, Inc. Named Grant

The York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. had a great time on their Spring Innovative Grant Prize Patrol Wednesday, March 2nd. The YFPE also celebrated the first annual named grant for spring from Chad Green, titled, “Chad Green Reading for Merit Innovative Grant in Honor of Katherine Snead.” Myra Ingram, a Kindergarten teacher from Yorktown Elementary School (YES) was the lucky recipient of this grant. Ms. Ingram’s class was very excited to meet the YFPE, Inc. Prize Patrol and especially enjoyed Mr. Green’s tips regarding reading. The YFPE, Inc. Innovative Instructional Grant Program is designed to provide grants to enable York County School Division teachers to explore new techniques and develop innovative approaches to educational projects. The YFPE, Inc. also has several other mission goals that support the division throughout the school year. York County citizens and businesses are encouraged to participate in the grant program by making a contribution. Contributors may fund a grant in honor or memory of a loved one. Every contribution is important and will be put to excellent use.


Seaford Kindergarteners Honor Dr. Seuss

Lisa Elder's kindergarten class at Seaford Elementary School (SES) honored Dr. Seuss by dressing up as Cat in The Hat. March 2nd was Dr. Seuss' birthday and kicked off Seaford's Read Across America Month.

On March 2nd the cafeteria staff at Seaford Elementary School (SES) honored Dr. Seuss on his birthday. The serving line was decorated with gift boxes and Seuss themed decorations. The staff were dressed in various character costumes from the fantasy world of Dr. Seuss as they served lunch to the Seaford Students.

Tabb Elementary School (TES) celebrated Read Across America with a storybook costume parade. First grade students marched to the merry tunes of a handmade Seuss-A-Phone played by music teacher, Jonathan Twitero.


Yorktown Middle Student Qualifies For National Geographic Bee

Ethan Jones, a Yorktown Middle School (YMS) eighth grader, qualified to participate at the state level of the National Geographic Bee, sponsored by Google and Plum Creek. The state Bee will be held on Friday, April 1, 2011 at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia. One winner from each state will advance to the national competition to be held May 24 and May 25 at the National Geographic headquarters in Washington, D.C.


York High School National Merit Finalists

York High School (YHS) is proud to announce three students who have been named as National Merit Scholarship Finalists. Corrigan Blanchfield, Ke Cheng, and Brian Xu are all eligible for scholarships through the National Merit Corporation based on their outstanding academic performance at York High School.

Patricia Campbell's sixth grade English classes use popcorn for a descriptive writing assignment. Students were asked to use their five senses to describe the popcorn.

Grafton Middle School Loves Healthy Hearts

The Grafton Middle School (GMS) Builders' Club supported the GoRed for Women's healthy heart campaign by having hat day, a bake sale and inviting everyone to wear red on Friday, February 18th. The Builder’s Club collected over $100 for the American Heart Association.
