Magruder Elementary Students Drop Everything and Read in Costume

On March 4, Magruder Elementary School (MES) students celebrated Read Across America by dressing in Dr. Seuss inspired costumes. Everyone in the school moved into the hallways for a school-wide read-in at 12:00.

The Youth 2 Youth (Y2Y) Club is an international substance abuse and violence prevention program. Y2Y harnesses the powerful influence of positive peer pressure to encourage students to reach out to help others. The Grafton Middle School (GMS) Y2Y Club has joined the Campaign, Pasta for Pennies Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as a school wide project. During this campaign students are encouraged to donate spare change to support the society's mission to cure Leukemia, Myeloma and Hodgkin's disease and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.


Magruder Elementary Read Across America Food Drive

Magruder Elementary School (MES) students brought breakfast foods to school to donate to those in need as part of Read Across America. The food was donated to FISH. FISH of Williamsburg Virginia depends entirely upon a caring community for food, clothing and cash donations.

Waller Mill Elementary Celebrates Dr. Seuss' Birthday

Students at Waller Mill Elementary School (WMES) celebrated the birthday of Dr. Seuss with hats provided by the WMES Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and a special reading of Dr. Seuss’s Great Day for Up by Greg Dolak, Associate Director of Maintenance & Facilities for York County School Division, from a boom lift.


Pets Are Worth Saving - PAWS - at Grafton Bethel Elementary

Grafton High School (GHS) Key Club and Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) K-Kids combined efforts to collect pet supplies for The Peninsula Pet Pantry. Students donated pet food, pet collars, pet bedding and other supplies for this worthy cause.


Grafton Bethel Elementary First Grader Bicycle Winner in Aramark Survey

The Cat in the Hat visited Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) on Thursday to award a brand new pink bicycle to Miss Olivia Liggins, a first grader in Becky Irons’ class. Olivia submitted a survey about cafeteria lunches and her name was picked as the bicycle winner at Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES). Thank you Aramark!


Seaford Elementary Odyssey of the Mind Team Advances to State Competition

Seaford Elementary School's (SES) Odyssey of the Mind Team competed in the Regional Competition on March 5. The problem the students chose was called "Le Tour Guide" and their solution involves Amelia Bedelia giving a tour of the White House, the Capitol Building and a few unexpected places in between. They competed against 13 teams in the Tidewater Region and tied for 1st place. They will now compete against teams from all over Virginia at the Odyssey of the Mind State Tournament to be held in Alexandria, Virginia on April 16th.


Seaford Elementary Battle of the Books Team Takes 1st Place

Seaford Elementary School’s (SES) Battle of the Books team took 1st place in the district competition on March 3. They are moving on to represent the county at the regional meet on March 19th.


Read Across America Rocks at Yorktown Elementary

Yorktown Elementary School (YES) celebrated Read Across America Day in Seussical style. Students dressed in red and white and teachers donned their Seuss costumes and hats. The entire school participated in a read-in that stretched through every hallway in the school. The day culminated with a visit from the Cat in the Hat who greeted students and staff. National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America is an annual program that calls for every child to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss. The program's purpose is to motivate students to read and enjoy literature. YES will celebrate Read Across America throughout the month of March with guest readers, special activities and Dr. Seuss themed contests.
