Yorktown Middle’s Battle of the Book Team Makes the Finals!Posted on: Thursday, March 24, 2011Yorktown Middle School's (YMS) Battle of the Books team placed in the top three at the preliminary regional competition held at Williamsburg Regional Library (WRL) on Saturday, March 19. Team members Anjali Patel, Ben Clarke, Matt Clarke, and Mason Stoecker were cheered on silently by alternates Mikayla Moore and Matt Nickerson, and in absentia, Celia Neser and Erik Neser. The team will compete against schools from Newport News and Williamsburg at the final competition on Friday, March 25 at 7:45pm at WRL. |
Textbook and Materials ReviewPosted on: Thursday, March 24, 2011Parents and other interested parties are invited to review textbooks that are recommended for purchase for the 2011-2012 school year. Textbooks for the following courses will be on display in the round conference room at the School Board Office on Monday, March 28 from 3:30 to 5:00 pm. Mathematics Grades K – 5 textbooks will be available for preview. The York County School Division School Board Office is located at 302 Dare Road. |

Yorktown Middle Soars with "Caps for Cops"Posted on: Friday, March 18, 2011The Yorktown Middle School (YMS) Falcons proudly wore their hats on March 16 to raise over $250 for the Police Unity Tour. Students were greeted at the front door by Deputy Shafer and Shelly Asher who collected donations for the first annual YMS "Caps for Cops" event, sponsored by the York-Poquoson Sherriff's Office, YMS Builder's Club, YMS SCA and YMS Classics Club. For only $1, Falcons had the privilege of wearing their hat all day long and the pride in knowing they helped raise awareness of Law Enforcement Officers who have died in the line of duty. |
Walk To Live WellPosted on: Friday, March 18, 2011Bethel Manor Elementary School (BMES) has received a $2,000 grant from Richmond-based nonprofit Prevention Connections to establish a Safe Routes to School (SRTS) walk at Bethel Manor Elementary School. Bethel Manor students will participate in a kick-off assembly at 2:00 on Friday, March 11th in the school's cafetorium, to learn about the school's program: Walk to Live Well. During the assembly second grade students will perform songs about walking and exercising, the health benefits of walking will be shared, and incentives for walking to school will be communicated. Afterwards the entire student body will take a walk around the school to get the momentum started. During the week of March 14-18 teachers will be in the neighborhood encouraging students to walk. |

York High Shines and Wins at Regional Odyssey of the Mind TournamentPosted on: Friday, March 18, 2011The York High School (YHS) Full Circle Odyssey of the Mind team took first place at the regional tournament held February 26 at Bethel High School. Competing against schools from all over the Peninsula, the BHS team was recognized for their creativity and skill, receiving highest marks in both their long term problem and spontaneous scores. Coached by YYHS English instructor Heather Davis, the team looks forward to representing YHS and the York County School Division at the State Tournament on April 16, 2011. |
