Queens Lake Middle Donates Over $1,400 to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

Thank you to the Queens Lake Middle School (QLMS) community for donating over $1,400 to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The following classes donated over 100 dollars: Susan O'Hare’s sixth grade class, Barbara Poland’s sixth grade class, Heather Stark’s eighth grade class, Jessica Vaillancourt’s eighth grade class, and Thomas Weidinger’s sixth grade class. In third place for the most money donated by an A Day homeroom class is Ms. O'Hare’s class with an average of $10.27 per student. In second place with the most money donated by the A Day homeroom is Mr. Weidinger’s class with an average of $12.06 per person. The first place A Day homeroom who donated the most money is Ms. Stark’s class. Ms. Stark’s class averaged $12.86 per person and raised a total of $334.57.


Grafton Bethel 4th Graders Visit Richmond

The fourth grade classes from Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES), took a field trip to Richmond to learn about the capitol and the history the city holds. The students gathered on the front steps of the capitol for a group photo.


Coventry 5th Graders Celebrate Poetry Month

Fifth graders from Elizabeth Williams’ fifth grade class at Coventry Elementary School created free verse and concrete poems in honor of National Poetry Month.


Tabb SCA Can-Struction

The Tabb High School (THS) SCA joined other local areal schools at Patrick Henry Mall in a "Can-Struction" competition. The SCA coordinated with many of the Tabb High clubs and organizations, including Key Club, DECA and National Honor Society, to hold a canned food drive that resulted in the over 700 cans. The cans were then used to construct a replica of the Taj Mahal. "Seven Wonders of the World" was this year's construction theme at Patrick Henry Mall on Saturday April 21st. Students gathered at 8am to construct the replica from the canned food. After the event, the canned food was donated to the Peninsula Food Bank.


Walk to School for Earth Day - A Little Delayed

While Earth Day was Sunday, April 22nd, Carol Bauer, fourth grade teacher at Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES), organized a morning walk to school on Monday to celebrate.


Congratulations to Tabb High Band Members

Congratulations to two Tabb High School (THS) Band students, Senior clarinet player Kathleen Krist, and Junior alto saxophone player Daniel Deskins, who were selected via audition for the All State Virginia Band. Kathleen and Daniel qualified to audition at James Madison University last month after placing at the top of their sections at the local All District Festival in January. They are the first Tabb Students to successfully audition for the All State Band in 7 years. Additionally, congratulations to Bruton High School’s Erin Morrow. The All State performance will be held in April, in Richmond.


Grafton Bethel Elementary Clinic Gets a Facelift!

Grafton Bethel Elementary School’s (GBES) clinic gets a facelift with two new murals by artist Kendra Gilpatrick and her daughters Kayla (senior at Grafton High School) and Hannah (3rd grade). Kendra is the PTA chairperson for the Labels committee at GBES. The PTA also paid for two new beds in the clinic.


A Pie in the Face

On a recent sunny Friday afternoon, Tabb Elementary School (TES) celebrated 100% PTA membership. Early in the year, Cheryl Parr, Principal at TES, challenged the school to reach the 100% mark. Having previously kissed a horse for reaching the same goal, she needed something better this year. A "Pie in the Face" proved just the thing. Children purchased chances for the honor of "pieing" their favorite teacher. As a result, over $200.00 was donated to the York County Food Pantry.


Two YCSD Schools Capture First Place In Virginia Odyssey Of The Mind Competition

Four York County School Division (YCSD) teams participated in the Virginia Odyssey of the Mind competition that was held on Saturday, April 14 at Menchville High School in Newport News. Teams from both Grafton High School (GHS) and York High School (YHS) won first place in their problem categories and are now invited to participate in the World Finals of Odyssey of the Mind that will be held at Iowa State University May 23 - May 26. Kelly Ha, a senior at Grafton High School and member of the GHS Odyssey of the Mind team, received a VOICES Scholarship at the State Odyssey of the Mind Tournament. Kelly, who will receive $500 each year for four years, plans on attending the University of Pennsylvania in the fall.


Grafton Bethel Loves Our Military Students

On Friday, April 13th, Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) students and staff gathered as a tribute to our military students in response to Governor McDonnell's proclamation that April 2012 is Military Child Month in the Commonwealth of Virginia. A purple rainbow of students and staff was captured in the photos.
