MES Second Graders Skype with Meteorologist

Magruder Elementary School second graders had a wonderful time during their transformative lesson on weather which included Skype sessions with Jeremy Wheeler from television station WAVY-TV10. The students were very engaged and Mr. Wheeler gave several insights into how meteorologists forecast and track weather here on the Virginia coastline.


Mt. Vernon Celebrates Read Across America

Students in Mrs. Jacobson's first grade class at Mt. Vernon Elementary School read books to Shaggy, a therapy dog, during Read Across America month. Shaggy and his owner, Michele Mahaffey, visit schools and hospitals to help people feel better.


Trophies Awarded to Reflections Winners at Yorktown Elementary

More than 150 Yorktown Elementary students participated in the PTA Reflections Program. The 2012 Reflections Theme was "The Magic of the Moment..." Student winners were recognized by receiving trophies for their work in literature, musical composition, photography, visual arts, dance choreography, and film production.


Bullying Awareness Activities

Waller Mill Elementary School (WMES) students and staff have participated in a variety of activities for Bullying Prevention Month. To culminate the school’s Anti-Bullying Spirit Days students and staff collaborated with Dare Elementary School (DES) to host a Skype session which included showcasing art teacher, Renee Koob, who works at both schools. Students at both schools were encouraged to sit with a new friend at lunch. Students also participated in a positive message "Snowball Throw" in their classes and enjoyed hot cocoa to "Warm up to a new friend”. WMES Students exchanged positive affirmation notes with DES Students to fill their buckets! In return, DES Students created and shared Valentine-Grams with WMES students' buckets.


GBES Third Graders Have a Heart!

After viewing videos of children in third world countries who didn't have clean water to drink, Grafton Bethel Elementary third graders brainstormed ways to help. Through the guidance of the third grade teachers, they decided to create Valentine treats to raise money for a water filtration system. More than $500 was raised and through their donations they can now fund six water filtration systems!

The Tabb Elementary 2012 Rock Festival really ROCKED! The purpose of this event was to incorporate some excitement into learning about rocks and the Earth's layers. Fifth grade students went from class to class doing the fun activities set up.


YHS Classroom Visit

YCSD Superintendent Eric Williams, Ed.D. visited the senior English class taught by Antoinette Barnett at York High School in February. He was invited to speak to the class in connection with their college and career unit. Students asked questions regarding the work of a Superintendent and also discussed effective teaching, favorite lessons and school food.


Local Educators to Participate in Global Education Symposium in Washington D.C.

York High School teacher Amy Holtschneider and Principal Dr. Peggie Constantino visited Washington D.C. in February to take part in the Teachers for Global Classrooms Program’s (TGC) Global Education Symposium. They are among a group of 160 educators selected to participate in the event, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA). The Teachers for Global Classrooms Program is an exchange and professional development opportunity for secondary school teachers. The program’s goal is to give teachers the experience and skills to advance their schools’ global education practices, internationalizing teaching and learning in their classrooms. Participants apply through the non-profit organization IREX.
