Why Take Band?

"The College Entrance Examination Board says those who take more than four years of arts (such as music) score 34 points higher on the verbal portion of the SAT and 18 points higher on the math portion than those who take less than a year." (NEA Today 1991)

"Successful music students tend to possess the qualities and skills that are considered essential to employers in business, education, and service organizations." (Rees, 1988)

"Students who take arts courses have generally higher SAT scores than those who do not take arts courses...This information suggests that students cannot justifiably be counseled to cease taking arts courses because other courses can better prepare them for college and the SAT." (College Entrance Examination Board, 1987-1989)

"High school music students have higher grade point averages than non-music students in the same school." (Bands Across the USA, 1989)

"Music students always out-perform non-music students on achievement tests in reading and math. Because of their study of music their skills are better at: reading, anticipating, memory, listening, forecasting, recall and concentration." (Friedman, 1959)

"A high percentage of participants in instrumental music programs go on to pursue professional careers other than music and later credit disciplines learned in instrumental music with giving them the impetus for their achievement." (Susi, 1990)

There is a saying "Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it". Many of you have ideas of what band is like - some good, some bad. You may have friends or relatives that are or were in band.

In Beginning Band, the first thing we do is the selection of an instrument. Before long, you will be making your first sounds. You will be amazed at how quickly you go from being a "noise maker" to being a music maker.

You will experience the excitement of your first performance. Gradually you will play better and the music will get more interesting. Soon you will find out that your progress is dependent upon your effort.

Talk to your parents and ask them if you can take band. It is better to try NOW - don’t wait until it is too late and wish you had tried

Beginning Band.
