Hi Everyone, my name is Jerry
Turner and I live in Newport
News, Virginia.
I graduated from Hampton
High School
in 1970. After graduating
high school I attended Old
Dominion University.
I graduated from Old Dominion with a BS in Health and Physical
Education in
1974. After receiving my degree, I taught in the Hampton City Schools
for a
total of five years. I also coached football, basketball, and JV
baseball
at Hampton
High School.
When the school system went
to the middle school concept of moving 9th grade into high school and
sixth
grade into middle school, and did away with the coaching stipends, I
really had
more month than I had money. I decided to leave teaching
and started a new
career in sales. I soon began working for a major life insurance
company.
I worked my way up the corporate ladder for 20 years and eventually
became a
district manager. Although this was paying the bills I soon realized
that this
was not where I wanted to be. You see, my niece was killed in a car
accident,
and this left me wondering what was being taught in the high schools. I
went
back to Old Dominion as well as Christopher Newport
University
to become re-certified to teach Classroom and Behind the Wheel to both
teens
and adults. I soon opened my own commercial driving school in memory of
my
niece, Laura Ann Fink, in hopes of making a difference in the
driving
abilities of the teens in this area. This eventually led to an
opportunity to
teach driver's education at York
High School, in Yorktown, Virginia. I was offered a
long term substitute position, and it just so happened to be in Health
and
Physical Education... I took it!! I substituted for about six
weeks and
was immediately offered the opportunity to teach full time. I took that
too!! I am currently on my fourth year at York High School
teaching Health and Physical Education, Driver's Education as well as
coaching
JV Baseball! My passion has always been and continues to be making a
difference
in the lives of young people. I am a true example of how history
repeats
itself!!! I have a wonderful wife of 32 years and three wonderful
daughters.
The oldest (27) is married with two children, and the other two
(25 and
22) are in college, attending Old Dominion
University. I
enjoy spending time with my family especially my two
grandchildren. I love
playing golf, swimming, and coaching baseball. But my all time passion
is
teaching behind the wheel.
