Course Title: Math
Analysis
Text: Pre-calculus with Limits (Larson,
4th edition)
Course Description: This course extends students’ knowledge of
function characteristics and introduces them to another mode of mathematical
reasoning. Students enrolled are assumed to have mastered Algebra II
concepts. The content of this course serves as appropriate preparation for an
AP calculus course. Graphing calculators are used daily.
Competencies: Upon completion of this course, you will be
better able to do the following:
- Investigate
and identify the characteristics of polynomial and rational functions.
- Find
compositions and inverses of functions.
- Investigate
and describe the continuity of functions, using graphs.
- Expand
binomials having positive integral exponents using Binomial Theorem,
formula for combinations, and Pascal’s triangle.
- Solve
problems involving arithmetic and geometric sequences and series.
- Use
mathematical induction to prove formulas/statements.
- Find
the limit of an algebraic function, if it exists.
- Apply
the characteristics of conic section equations in (h, k) and standard
form.
- Investigate
and identify the characteristics of exponential and logarithmic functions
in order to graph these functions and solve equations.
- Identify,
create, and solve practical problems involving triangles. Techniques will
include using the trigonometric functions, the Pythagorean Theorem, the
Law of Sines, and the Law of Cosines.
- Perform
operations with vectors in the coordinate plane and solve problems using
vectors.

- No
talking or other activity that disturbs others will be allowed.
- No
playing games on a calculator during class lecture or class work
assignments.
- Integrity,
responsibility, and pride will be demonstrated in work and behavior.
- Make
up work after an absence should be completed within the designated time.
Failure to complete missing work will result in a zero.
Attendance Policy:
To comply with Virginia State Law, students are
expected to attend school every day and to be on time unless there is illness
or death in the immediate family.
Evaluation:
·
Test/Project 50%
·
Daily work 50%
(Quizzes, Classwork,
and Homework checks)
All work will be
assigned points.
¨ For Bonus - Homework is due no later than
the day for the test on that chapter. It will be evaluated for completeness and
correctness and will result in bonus dailywork
points. NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED
¨ I will be available for extra help Tuesday
through Thursday after school from 1:50-2:30. Please let me know if you plan to
come in so that I can let you know if I have any other commitments.
