Mrs. Steinmiller started working at York High School in August 2003 as the Library Assistant. She took over the position of Library Media Specialist in September 2006, after the previous LMS retired. She received her B.A. in French and Anthropology in 1983 from California State University, Sacramento, and her M.S. in Curriculum, Instruction & Media Technology/Library Media from Indiana State University in August, 2006.
Prior to working at York High School, Mrs. Steinmiller earned her living as an executive secretary at Kinyo Virginia, Inc., a local manufacturing plant in Newport News. She is married to Jeff, a career Air Force officer who retired in September, 2006. They have two children, Zachary, 11, and Emily, 9, as well as two cats, Kato and Taz. They moved to Yorktown from Alabama in 1999, and have decided to reside here permanently.
Mrs. Steinmiller grew up in Sacramento, California, in the house
where her father still resides. She received a very eclectic elementary
education at the Sacramento Waldorf School, where the curriculum
included knitting, woodworking, eurythmy (a form of interpretive
dance), music and art, as well as the standard reading, writing and
arithmetic. One of her idols at Waldorf was Mrs. Hilary Winston, the
school librarian, and it is largely due to Mrs. Winston's influence
that Mrs. Steinmiller was inspired to make the transition from
secretary to high school librarian.
Mrs. Steinmiller enjoys hiking and camping with her family in this beautiful state of Virginia. She's something of a Civil War buff, and of course the area offers many opportunities to indulge this particular passion. She's an avid cook, speaks French reasonably fluently, and is a Notary Public for the Commonwealth. She LOVES to read, and hopes to infect all her students with a life-long love of reading and learning.
