My SAT Online Score Report!

When your students get their SAT scores will they really get their scores? What's the meaning behind the numbers? Introducing MY SAT ONLINE SCORE REPORT. It's their score simplified. Demystified. Customized. For starters, students get a detailed breakdown of the numbers. They see how they did relative to other kids across town, and across the country. They get tools that help match them to colleges and possible careers. If students are considering taking the test again, MY SAT ONLINE SCORE REPORT has resources they can use to help them improve their scores. It's a great new site you can use with your students to help guide them down the right path, ultimately making your job more fulfilling. Not to mention it makes better use of the limited time you have with each student.

The more knowledge students have about themselves, their strengths and their weaknesses, the more they'll understand what it will take to reach their goals. So click here and log on with your students and go over their personalized score information together. Don't forget—the SAT shows what they know, and what they know they can do.

New 2008-2009 Schedule

Important AP Information

In preparation for the upcoming school year, we will be implementing AP contracts for any AP course taught in the classroom setting.  There will be a specific contract for each course and every student who plans on taking an AP course will receive a contract  (per course) in addition to the summer assignments specific to the course.  In order to stay enrolled in an AP course, the student must return their signed contract(s) (which requires the student and parent to sign) no later than  Monday, June 9th .  Any student who does not turn in a  signed contract will be placed in an alternate course (i.e. regular U. S. History instead of AP U. S. History).
   Contracts and summer work assignments will be disseminated to students on Wednesday, May 28th and Thursday, May 29th.

Langley GISP Flyer

NASA – STEM Educational Outreach Program
Virginia Space Grant Consortium and NASA Langley Research Center, with the assistance of the Virginia Department of Education, are partnering to provide an exciting new pilot opportunity for high school students in Virginia in 2008.

Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars is a competitive program that allows high school juniors to apply for an engaging NASA-developed course using a Space Exploration theme.  Online coursework will teach a broad range of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills aligned with Virginia and national Standards of Learning. After successfully completing the course, scholars participate in an all-expense-paid, six-day residential academy at NASA Langley Research Center. The program seeks to broaden students’ STEM knowledge, while providing meaningful, real-world experiences and career role models.

 The Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars coursework is offered online from April through June 2008. This graded course consists of ten lessons and a final project that allow students to build their knowledge of NASA and space exploration and key STEM skills. Master educators will work with students online throughout the course, providing ongoing communication and feedback on assignments, quizzes, and the final project. Students can view the coursework at the Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars Web site, www.vasts.spacegrant.org.

Students selected for the residential NASA Summer Academy will spend six days with science, engineering and technology mentors and master educators at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, from July 27 – August 1, 2008.  They will undertake a mentored team aerospace mission and will be immersed in hands-on, experiential STEM activities.  Students will receive certificates for successful completion of online coursework and the summer academy experience.

Virginia Aerospace Scholars is modeled after the NASA award-winning Texas Aerospace Scholars program sponsored by NASA Johnson Space Center and the State of Texas. Coursework is provided by NASA Johnson Space Center.

To apply, students must:

·         Be a high school junior with an interest in science, technology, engineering or mathematics;

·         Be a Virginia resident and U.S. citizen;

·         Have a minimum GPA of 2.7;

·         Be at least 16 years of age; and

·         Have Internet access and e-mail to complete online assignments.

Additional background information and application forms can be found at www.vasts.spacegrant.org. The application deadline is March 14, 2008. For further information, please contact Paula Klonowski, by e-mail at Paula.Klonowski@doe.virginia.gov, or telephone at (804) 371-0249.

Wondering how you are going to pay for college?
Many of you may be wondering how you are going to pay for college.  New this year is FAFSA4caster.  FAFSA4caster is for students who would like to find out how much federal student aid they might be eligible for.  It allows students to get an early start on the financial aid process.  The benefit of this program goes beyond early estimates.  Some of the data entered in FAFSA4caster will populate FAFSA on the Web when the student officially applies for federal student aid during their senior year.

What are other benefits?
FAFSA4caster also:
  • Reduces the time it will take to complete the online applications, FAFSA on Web Helps users become familiar with the student aid lifecycle
  • Conducts a data match with the Social Security Administration; this gives students the opportunity to resolve issues prior to applying for federal student aid.  If a Social Security number match fails, students will be notified to have the issue resolved before officially applying for aid.
  • Automatically generates and emails the Federal Student Aid PIN for the student to use when applying for federal student aid at FAFSA on the Web
How do I get started?
You can access FAFSA4caster at www.FederalStudentAid.ed.gov  Remember that the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or FAFSA on the Web, the online version, is the application used to apply for federal student aid.  But if you’re not ready to file the FAFSA, you can submit a FAFSA4caster to receive an early estimate of your student aid eligibility.  You’ll need:
  • Your Social Security number;
  • To create a password, used to secure data and allow you to retrieve your saved or submitted FAFSA4caster;
  • To refer to your and your parents’, if you’re a dependent student, W-2 forms, bank statements and business and mortgage information; and
  • Your Alien Registration number (if not a U.S. citizen).

When you submit your FAFSA4caster, you will be able to see what college might cost depending on the type of school you plan to attend.  If you plan to attend school full-time at a four-year public school, it shows the types of federal student aid that might help cover that cost, listing your estimated award amount for the Federal Pell Grant Program and providing examples of award packages showing in-state and out-of-state costs.  Finally, FAFSA4caster shows any estimated financial need that remains after the estimated aid amounts and EFC are taken into account.
