General Information

Television Production is a double-period, two-credit course designed for students thinking about taking "communications" courses in college and those just wanting to learn more about video production in general. It is taught at the York Broadcast Center facilities at York High School and is open to students in any York County high school. Bus transportation is normally provided for students from Grafton and Tabb High Schools. Bruton students may have to take some classes at York High in order to attend TV production. Be sure to check with your guidance counselor. (Email links are at the bottom of this page.)

Utilizing various techniques and hands-on training, students are to become competent in specific areas of video production as specified by the Virginia Department of Education through Virginia Standards for Competency-Based Education (TV-1 list, TV-2 list). The first-year class (TV-1) is centered on studio production, using the TV-46/47 television studio and control room equipment. In the second-year class, students work with video production computer technology and in "real-world" field production environments. TV-2 students use mostly digital post-production and editing equipment.

All students are expected to join the local Skills USA student organization to learn more about business and working in the real world.  Field trips to places such as WAVY TV-10 and speakers from various video-related businesses are part of the “real world” learning process. Parents are always welcome and encouraged to join us for these extra activities.

TV students are involved in various projects that may end up being telecast on TV-47. Some students are also involved in working as crewmembers on school division TV programs and/or instructional videos. Students work with very expensive equipment and must often meet deadlines. Because of the nature of the class, student projects must be produced in the studio instead of at home, so there is quite a bit of "down-time" for those not directly involved with every aspect of every project.

IN ORDER TO SUCCEED, STUDENTS WHO APPLY FOR THIS COURSE SHOULD BE SOCIALLY MATURE, SELF-MOTIVATED, AND ABLE TO WORK CLOSELY WITH OTHERS!

Below are email links to guidance departments at the high schools. If there are more applications than available positions, I may need to interview students and use teacher input to decide who is accepted.
