NHS Bylaws

***The following bylaws are in accordance with

and in addition to the Constitution of the National Honor Society***

 

ARTICLE I

SELECTION PROCEDURES

Section 1.  At the end of the first semester of a student’s junior year, students’ GPAs will be examined to determine who meets the minimum scholarship requirement of a 3.25 GPA. 

Section 2.  A student who meets the GPA requirement will be requested to complete a student information form to provide the faculty council with sufficient information to judge student merit in the qualities of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. 

Section 3.  Following, teachers and administrators may query about a student’s academic/scholastic record in regard to the qualities of character, leadership, and service.

Section 4.  Finally, the York High School faculty council will meet to examine all pertinent data provide and, by majority vote, select students for membership. 

 

ARTICLE II

MAINTAINING MEMBERSHIP

Section 1.  In order to maintain active membership, a student must do the following:

Section 2.  Uphold the scholarship requirement by continuing to maintain a 3.25 GPA and continue to exhibit the qualities of leadership, character, and service. 

Section 3.  Participate in at least fifteen hours of school/community service per semester.   These hours must be documented and have an authorized signature. 

Section 4.  Participate in one of two chapter projects. 

Section 5.  Pay dues in a timely fashion in order to cover the costs of chapter affiliation, chapter certificates, seal diplomas, etc. 

Section 6.  Attend all meetings. (you must see sponsor ahead of time if there is a need to miss)

 

ARTICLE III

DISCIPLINARY AND DISMISSAL PROCEEDINGS

Section 1.  A member may be considered for disciplinary action if

             1 -- Their GPA falls below 3.25 during any semester of membership

             2 -- They do not appropriately maintain membership through failure to complete              actions of  Article 2, sections 3 - 6.

             3 -- They are discovered to have violated the NHS standards of character,                        leadership or service.

Section 2.  Disciplinary actions for cases 1 and 2 will include written notice of the problem and will indicate the period of remediation.   Remediation for case 1 is satisfactory progress towards meeting the GPA cut-off at interim and end of the quarter.  Remediation for case 2 includes completion of required service hours, payment of dues, or participation in a Service Project.

Section 3.  For case 3 and situations of cases 1 & 2 where remediation has failed to occur, the faculty council will meet to discuss the level of disciplinary action warranted.  Disciplinary Actions include, but are not limited to:  Additional service hours and/or suspension of membership for up to 6 months.  During the suspension period the student may not hold office or participate in induction activities, but must still complete all other requirements of membership. If a student’s actions warrant disciplinary action, a Disciplinary letter will be sent to the student.  Failure to meet the guidelines stated in the Disciplinary letter may result in additional disciplinary actions or a call for dismissal.

Section 4.  If the Faculty Council decides that dismissal is warranted, the students will receive written notification and the rights of due process as stated in the Constitution of the National Honor Society will proceed.

 

ARTICLE IV

ELECTION OF OFFICERS

Section 1.  A meeting held the outgoing National Honor Society officers will take place near the end of the year so that the newly inducted members may select new officers for the upcoming school year. 

Section 2.  Open nominations will be taken by the President and recorded by the Secretary until no further nominations are made by the new membership. 

Section 3.  The new members will then vote by written ballot on each office in the following order:  President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer. 

Section 4.  The ballots will be counted by the chapter advisor, and the results will be announced at an appropriate time. 

Section 5.  The newly elected officers shall be sworn in at an appropriate time and in an appropriate fashion 

 

ARTICLE V

OFFICER DUTIES

Section 1.  The officers of the York High School National Honor Society shall have the duties as follows: 

Section 2.  The President will:

             -Set an agenda for meetings

             -Set a reasonable time and place for members to meet

             -Ensure that adequate notice and information is provided to members about              meetings

             -Call meetings to order and act as chairperson during discussion

             -Keep meetings in order and flowing in an orderly fashion

             -Adjourn meetings when deemed appropriate

             -Act as the chief head and representative of the National Honor Society

             -Fulfill whatever duties deemed necessary in planning major projects, ceremonies,              and day-to-day operations of the National Honor Society

             -Call special officer meetings when deemed necessary

Section 3.  The Vice President will:

             -Chair a meeting when the President is absent

             -Take the office of President if he/she resigns or is permanently unable to fulfill the              duties of his/her office for whatever reason

             -Assist the President in the day-to-day operations of the National Honor Society

Section 4.  The Secretary will:

             -Keep the minutes-the official records-of every meeting

             -During meetings

                          -Check attendance

                          -Read minutes of previous meeting

                          -Report upon any written correspondence sent or received

             -Act as the chief writer/sender of correspondence deemed important to the society

Section 5.  The Treasurer will:

             -Keep the National Honor Society’s financial records, including all incoming and              outgoing funds 

             -Pay the society’s bills and send bills to those who owe money to the group

             -Report to the members the society’s finances when deemed necessary

             -Act as the chief collector and organizer of collecting dues and other moneys from              the members

 

Section 6.  The Historian will:

             -Be in charge of the induction album

             -Create the induction pages for the fall and spring inductions

 

Section 7.  All officers will be expected to attend all meetings if at all possible
