The reading specialists at Yorktown Elementary Magnet provide the following programs:

READING RECOVERY:  This program is designed to help selected first grade children who need additional assistance in learning to read.  After the children have been identified, they receive individual reading and writing lessons for thirty minutes a day.

READING INTERVENTION PROGRAM:  Students identified as reading a year or more below grade level in grades two through five work in small groups of four to six each week with the reading teacher.  These sessions are in addition to the reading the students have with their homeroom teachers.

BREAKTHROUGH TO LITERACY:  This is an interactive early literacy program for kindergarten students.  The interactive software adjusts automatically to each student's level of language development.  Students are immersed in the relationship between meaning, print and sound.

Fundations:  This is a year long intervention program for selected Kindergarten, First Grade and Second Grade students.  Fundations addresses the areas of phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics, word study, fluency and comprehension.

MAKING CONNECTIONS: This is designed for students in grades one through five. This program helps students acquire and use strategies that build comprehension. The program is coordinated by the reading specialists and delivered by reading specialists and trained paraprofessionals. Making Connections features 90 sessions (18 weeks) of small-group reading and comprehension practice. Students are elected for the program based on performance in reading.
