Kindergarten Curriculum

Reading Scott Foresman Unit 3 - Everyday is Special & continue Breakthrough to Literacy

The student will use pictures to make predictions about story content, talk about characters, setting, and story events, use story language in discussions and retellings (K.8), read and explain own writing and drawings, demonstrate an understanding that print makes sense (K.6), will identify both uppercase and lower case letters of the alphabet (K.9).

Language Arts The student will begin to discriminate between spoken words and sentences, participate in choral speaking and recite short poems, rhymes, songs, and stories with repeated patterns (K.1), use words to describe location, size, color, and shape, use words to describe/name people, places, and things, use words to describe actions, and ask about words not understood (K.2), begin to take turns, listen, and stay on topic in informal conversations with peers and adults, use voice level, phrasing, sentence structure, and intonation appropriate for language situation, and begin to initiate conversations (K.3), hear, say, and manipulate phonemes (small units of sound) of spoken language (K.4), demonstrate an understanding of basic phonetic principles by recognizing rhyming words (K.7), will draw pictures and/or use letters and phonetically spelled words to write about experiences, stories, people, objects, or events (K.11), explore the uses of available technology for reading and writing (K.12).
Math Time & Patterns

The student will (K.4) investigate and recognize patterns from counting by fives and tens, using concrete objects and a calculator, (K.8) identify instruments used to measure time, (K.9) tell time to the hour using an analog or digital clock, (K.14) gather data relating to familiar experiences by counting and tallying.

Computation (K.6) The student will add and subtract whole numbers using up to 10 concrete items.

Daily Calendar Math Activities K.4, K.5, K.8, K.11, K.14, K.18

Science Shadows

The student will (K.1) conduct investigations, (K.7) investigate and understand that shadows occur when an object blocks light.

Magnets

The student will (K.1) investigate, (K.3) and understand that magnets have an effect on some materials, make some things move without touching them, and have useful applications.

Weather & Water

The student will (K.1) investigate and understand that water occurs in different forms: solid, liquid, gas; understand and explain that the natural flow of water is downhill, explain why some materials float in water while others sink (K.5), make weather observations (K.8).

History People/Events in History/Civics

George Washington and Abraham Lincoln

The student will identify examples of past events in legends, stories, and historical accounts of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln (K.1), identify George Washington as the first President of the United States and is often called the "Father of Our Country", identify Abraham Lincoln as a United States President and often called "Honest Abe". Explain that Presidents' Day is a holiday, a day when we honor all presidents of the U.S., especially George Washington and Abraham Lincoln (K.8).

Community Helpers The student will match simple descriptions of work that people do with the names of those jobs (K.6).
