Reading

Unit 4: Scott Foresman Reading

"Time and Time Again"

Stories include: "Yang's First Thanksgiving /Man" Skill: Compare and Contrast, "The Jr. Iditarod Race/Dogs" Skill: Main Idea and Supporting Details. "Night Alone/How the Sun Came" Skill: Predicting, "Heart of a Runner/Finding a Way" Skill: Context Clues, "Memory Box/Brain and Memory" Skill: Author's Purpose. Unit 4 Test.

The students will:

S.O.L. 5.4 - The student will read fictionand non fiction with accuracy and fluency.

S.O.L. 5.5 - The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of fiction.

S.O.L. 5.6 - The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of fiction and nonfiction.

"Fantastic Voyage: Traveling On"

Stories include: "I want to Vote/Kids voting USA" Skill: Setting, "Long path to Freedom/Railroad" Skill: Paraphrasing, "Chester Cricket/Easy Riders" Skill: Visualizing, "Passage to Freedom/1939" Skill: Context Clues, and Paul revere's Ride/Sybil" Skill; Paraphrasing. Unit 5 Test.

 

Language Arts

Writing

During this marking period the fifth grade students will be working with figurative language, grammar and writing skills, and writing structure. The students will also engage in reading discussions, and reading journals.

The students will:

S.O.L. 5.1 - The student will The student will listen, draw conclusions, and share responses in subject-related group learning activities.

S.O.L. 5.2 - The student will use effective nonverbal communication skills.

S.O.L 5.3 - The student will make planned oral presentations.

S.O.L. 5.8 - The student will write for a variety of purposes: to describe, to inform, to entertain, and to explain.

S.O.L. 5.9 - The student will edit writing for correct grammar, capitalization, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure.

Math

Measurement and Geometry

Throughout this term the students will learn about measurement in length, weight/mass, volume, square units, time, and temperature through a variety of classwork, multimedia, and hands on experiences. The student will also learn to recognize, draw, identify, measure, compare, and describe geometrical shapes thorugh a variety of educational techniques.

The students will know:

S.O.L 5.8 - The student will describe and determine the perimeter of a polygon and the area of a square rectangle and right triangle given the appropriate measures.

S.O.L 5.9 - The student will identify and describe the diameter, raduis, chord, and circumference of a circle.

S.O.L. 5.10 - The student will differentiate between area, perimeter, andvolume, and identify whether the application of teh concept of perimeter, area, or volume is appropriate for a given situation.

S.O.L 5.11 - The student will choose an appropraite measuring device and unit of measurement to solve problems involving measurement.

S.O.L. 5.12 - The student will determine an amount of elapsed timein hours and minutes within a 24 hour period.

S.O.L. 5.13 - The student will measure and draw right, acute, and obtuse angles and triangles, using appropriate tools.

S.O.L. 5.14 - The student will classify angles as right, acute, or abtuse.

S.O.L. 5.15 - The student will recognize, describe, identify, and analyze geometrical shapes using two-dimensional (plane) figures. (square, rectangle, triangle, paralellogram, rhombus, kite, and trapezoid).

S.O.L. 5.16 - The student will identify, compare, and analyze properties of three-dimensional (solid) geometrix shapes. (cylinder, cones, cubes, square pyramids, and rectangular prisms)

Science

Sound and Light

The students will learn about the wonders of sound and light through classwork, multimedia, presentations, and hands-on experimentation.

The students will:

S.O.L. 5.2 - the student will investigateand understand how sound is transmittedand is used as a means of communication.

S.O.L. 5.3 - the student will investigate and understand basic characteristics of visible light and how it behaves.

History

U.S. History to 1877

During this term we will be covering the following subjects: Colonial Life in America, the challenges of starting the new nation, The American Revolution, and westward expansion of the United States.

The Student will :

USI.5 - The student will demonstrate knowledge of the factors that shaped Colonial America.

USI.6 - The student will demonstrate knowldge of the causes and results of the American Revolution.

USI.7 - The student will demonstrate knowledge of the challenges faced by the new nation.

USI.8 - The student will demonstrate knowledge of westward expansion and reform in America.
