MES y-LineGuidance Counselor

COUNSELOR’S CORNER with Mrs. Katie Gaylord J

Welcome to the Counselor’s Corner at Waller Mill Elementary School!  I wanted to take this time to introduce myself and share with you information about the many services offered by the school counselor.  I received my Undergraduate Degree at Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island and then went on to Graduate School to receive my Masters in School Counseling from Saint Bonaventure University in Olean, New York.  I feel so fortunate to be at such a wonderful school and to be working with such energized and positive people!  Most friends recognize me as Miss Kennedy, but I was married over the summer and my name is now Mrs. Gaylord!  I have great enthusiasm for counseling and a passion for helping children.  As your child’s school counselor, I align with the schools mission to support the academic, career, and personal/social needs of all students.  Below are listed the many different areas in which I help your children here at Waller Mill Elementary.

As school counselor, I reach the students in a variety of ways, which include:

·        Classroom Guidance

·        Family Life Education

·        Individual Counseling

·        Group Counseling

·        Crisis Intervention

·        Gifted Education Contact

Topics I like to cover throughout the school year whether in a group, individually, or in the classroom depending on needs of the students are the following:

Friendship, Kindness, Diversity, Career Exploration, Understanding Self, Transitions, Grief / Loss, Changes in Family/Divorce, Drug-Awareness, Deployment within a Family

Club Updates:

Safe and Drug-Free Club

I am the Sponsor for our Safe and Drug-Free Club for the 3rd grade.  We meet once a month and attend the Dare Festival held in Yorktown in the Spring.  Our meetings will begin in October!  Look for information coming home soon for signing up and becoming a part of this wonderful program!

SCA

I will also be helping Mrs. Flanary with SCA this year.  This month we are holding elections for President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer!  If you are in 4th or 5th grade, please see your teacher about running for office!  The elections will be televised this year in the classrooms thanks to our new technology!

I am really looking forward to be working with your children and hope each of you will call on me at anytime for suggestions and/or input.  By working together, we can ensure a rewarding school year for your son or daughter and an excellent counseling program designed to meet your child’s specific developmental needs.

“Today’s young people are living in an exciting time, with an increasing diverse society, new technologies and expanding opportunities.  To help ensure that they are prepared to become the next generation of parents, workers, leaders and citizens, every student needs support, guidance and opportunities during childhood, a time of rapid GROWTH and CHANGE.”

-United States Department of Health and Human Services

Take care, Katie Gaylord J
