CLUBS & ACTIVITIES

Kiwanis Club /Builders Club

Advisors: Mrs. Mary Frances Ballard, Mrs. Sally Burri

When: Selected Thursdays

Where: TMS- Room 315

Description: The name "Kiwanis" was coined from an expression in an American Indian language of the Detroit area, "Nunc Kee-wanis," which means, "we trade" or "we share our talents."

 

Spirit Club

Advisor: Mr. Howard

When:  10/01, 10/08, 10/25, 01/31, 04/21

Where:  Cafeteria

Description:   If you like to "show your colors" (school colors), and are high spirited, come and join the TMS Spirit Club! Participants may vary each week! 

Members:
  • wear school colors
  • only charged $1 to attend games
  • will need to sign up before game day during lunch blocks
  • will need to be picked up after the game
  • will need to demonstrate GOOD sportsmanship 

TMS Play Productions

Advisor: Ms. Erin McGrann

Where: TMS- Cafeteria and Stage, Room 204

Description: 

Auditions are open to all students in 6th ,7th, and 8th grades. Students are selected on the basis of the audition for acting roles and crew positions. After completing the rehearsal process, the play is presented in public performance.

Math Counts

Advisor: Mrs. LuAnne Dow

Description: 

MATH COUNTS is a nationwide math enrichment, coaching and competition program.  The mission of Math Counts is to increase enthusiasm for and enhance achievement in middle school mathematics.  Schools in the region prepare for a competition which qualify students to move on to state and national competitions.  Practices are held weekly and on weekends prior to the competition.  The regional competition occurs in the January/February time frame at Nasa Langley.  The web site, www.mathcounts.org , provides information regarding MATHCOUNTS and free math resources. 

At Tabb Middle, students work and study problems each week.  Our Mathletes enjoy matching math skills against their peers and developing new mathematical skills.  Students are motivated as they compete to become a member of  the competition team or they may be chosen to compete as an individual member. 

 

SCA

Advisors: Mrs. Fairman, Ms. Luckring

Description:  The TMS Student Council Association (SCA) is comprised each year of student elected officers and homeroom representatives who are the liaisons between the student body and administration, faculty, & staff. These students focus on activities to improve the school and support community service. Some of the traditional activities organized by the SCA for the student body include food drives for local food banks, help for needy families, cards & letters to U.S. service members deployed overseas, and the fun, school-wide 'Fall Spirit Week' activities and Spring Variety Show. Monthly meetings are led by the student officers with guidance from the teacher sponsors.

 

Technology Student Association (TSA)

Advisor: Mr. Don Todd

When: Every Tuesday

Where: Room 409

Description: TSA provides student leadership and vocational interest competition opportunities in 31 different areas ranging from web page design, biotechnology, photography, dragster design, and computer LEGOS to technical writing.

 

Chess Club

Yearbook Staff

Advisor: Mrs. Terry Payne

When: Every Tuesday & Thursday (Except during a deadline time when a Wednesday meeting is added.)

Where: TMS - Room 201

Description:  The Yearbook staff is selected at the beginning of each school year from applications submitted by students. The job of the staff is to construct the school yearbook. This involves creating layouts, taking and selecting pictures, writing captions and copy for the yearbook.

The theme of the 2007-2008 yearbook is "Just Be You" which will be reflected throughout the book.

 

What's the Rumble?

Description: 

TMS's new newspaper club.  We expect to publish our newspaper online monthly and have a printed copy distributed once a quarter.  The newspaper staff has reporters and editors with the sponsor as the Editor in Chief.  

 

Reading Buddies Club

Advisor: Mrs. T. Reynolds

When: 10/10, 10/17, then 1st & 2nd Wednesday

Description:  This club is open to all students. The first meeting each month is used to prepare activities for reading with kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students. The following week, students visit Mount Vernon Elementary to work with their reading buddies.

 

CHROME

Description: 

Come meet other kids who are interested in Engineering, Technology, Math and Science! Different guest speakers will be brought in throughout the year.

 

Science/Ecology Club

Advisor: Mrs. Feigh

When: 10/11, then 2nd Thursday

Description:  Members will conduct experiments and create projects designed to care for our environment.

 

TMS Sleuths

Advisor: Ms. Spencer

When: One Tuesday a month

Where: Room 110


Description: 

While participating in hands-on forensic labs, students will learn to follow the scientific method as it related to crime. Students will have to use deductive reasoning and problem solving skills to develop theories to piece together the mysteries of a crime scene.

 

Jazz Band

Advisor: Mrs. Haigh

When: 2nd Semester Wednesdays

Where: Band Room


Description:  Performing group for band students who have at least one year of experience on their instrument. We will study and explore the musical genre of jazz. The group will perform at the spring concert.

 

Fellowship of Christian Athletes

Advisor: Mrs. Keefe

When: Wednesdays

Description:  FCA is a club open to everyone, where students can come together to encourage one another and build each other up. Students can talk about their faith and ask questions in a friendly atmosphere. Meetings include snacks, games, and a devotion.
