WANT TO BE A TIGER TUTOR?

The question, "Want to be a Tiger Tutor?" was asked of the 7th and 8th grade students in October. This is an exciting opportunity for students to contribute in significant and meaningful ways to their school.  Peer tutors help other students who are having difficulty in a particular area of study.  Often times, with a little extra help from peers, students who are struggling find the way to break down barriers to successful academic performance.

Peer Tutors stay after school one day a week for one quarter (9 weeks) of the school year.  He/She will be assigned to a classroom teacher to assist in after-school tutoring.

We are excited about this program and the tremendous response we have gotten from our students!  Peer tutors are leaders in our school.  Both peer tutors and those they work with will gain immeasurably through this program.  If you have any questions, please contact your child's guidance counselor.

Welcoming New Students to TMS!

Tabb Middle School is a school of continual change.  We say good-bye to many students moving away from our area during the school year and also welcome many new students.  Periodically during the school year, the guidance counselors invite new students to a welcome celebration.  Students enjoy refreshments and have an opportunity to get acquainted with others and share their personal experiences of being a "newcomer" to our school.

Tabb Middle School
Peer Helpers

Who?

Peer helpers are 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who are trained to be first friends to our new students.  All peer helpers also serve as role models by maintaining at least a "C" average in all classes and a good conduct record.

Why?

It can be tough coming to a new school in the middle of the year.  Peer helpers make new students feel welcomed and confident as they learn the ropes at their new school.

How?

Peer Helpers:

  • Greet all new students on their first day of school.
  • Help new students understand their schedules.
  • Give new students a tour of the building, pointing out the new students' classes.
  • Explain procedures such as getting lunch, checking out library books, making a guidance appointment, using lockers, and getting the afternoon bus.
  • Describe after-school activities and clubs.
  • Introduce new students to teachers and other staff members.
  • Introduce new students to their classmates, especially during lunch.

When?

Right now! Peer helpers are trained and working!  If you are a student or a parent of a student who will soon be entering Tabb Middle School, we look forward to meeting you and welcoming you into our school family.

An Invitation to Parents

Tabb Middle School Guidance offers a four-session parent workshop

based on Dr. Stephen Glenn's Developing Capable People .

“They're Not Done Cookin' Yet” is coming to TMS in October 2007.

Check back to this site for details.

Middle School students are in a unique time of their lives. Therefore, parents need unique ways of interacting with their children! This parenting group offers a framework for parents to help:

•  reduce conflict

•  build confidence

•  communicate with children based on openness, honesty and mutual respect

•  help children learn from mistakes and to be responsible for their own actions

The following comments are from TMS parents who have previously taken the class:

“I thoroughly enjoyed this class and after three weeks I have noticed a big change in the communication and problem solving within my house.”

“Excellent! It gives parents the opportunity to discuss experiences and listen to other parents going through the same thing. It is fun to report progress at home.”

“The most useful thing I learned was that instead of yelling and screaming I need to really listen to my child and to let them suffer the consequences of their actions.”

If you are interested in participating in this group, please contact the guidance office at 898-0319 or fill out the form linked below and send it to the TMS Guidance Office. We will contact you as the time draws nearer. We guarantee it will be time well spent!
