Typing Chemical Formulae with Subscripts and Superscripts
By Anita Biase
Microsoft Word makes it easy for you to type chemical formulae
with subscripts and superscripts. Here is the procedure:
- Open the Tools menu.
- Click on Customize.
- Choose Format on the Commands tab.
- Scroll down the list until you find the Subscript option.
- Select the option, hold down the mouse button, and drag the option to
the tool bar.
- Position the cursor on the tool bar. When the vertical insertion line
appears, release the mouse button.
- Repeat the above process with the Superscript option.
- To use these features, begin by typing the regular text, (i.e., H2O),
then go back and select the desired subscript or superscript text, (i.e., 2)
and hit the Subscript icon on the toolbar to obtain H2O.
