Tabb Forensics Club

We are pleased to again offer an after-school program to encourage reading, public speaking, and Oral Language SOLs….FORENSICS. Many students have enjoyed learning how to stand up in front of a class and do presentations, how to practice, and what tools they can use to help them prepare for them.  So…here we go again this year. I hope that the program will continue to be a success.

For those new to TES, here is some basic information. Forensics is an individual competition. Students choose material in the areas of Poetry, Prose, Duo, Original Oratory, and/or Storytelling. Each grade level, 5-2, is scheduled for a four-week cycle. They are given four weeks to prepare their presentation(s); and then after the fourth week, they present their work to another grade-level class. The first week is an Introductory Week, the second week is used for Auditory Recording of presentations, the Third Week is used for Video Recording, and the Fourth Week is used to learn about using the computer for recording and to practice their presentations one more time. Recordings are erased at the end of the cycles, and are used only for training. During the competition we use a modified scale from the High School Forensics Team, and our students are scored on Volume, Eye-contact/Reading, Speed, Posture and Inflection. The scoring is similar to the game of Golf, in that the lowest score is the winner: 1=highest score, 5=lowest score. First, Second, and Third place awards are given in each area for each grade-level during the end-of-school-year awards ceremonies.

Parents are required to give written permission for students to participate, and are also asked to approve your child’s literary selection. We will be meeting on Thursdays this year and you must provide pick-up transportation at 4:15 p.m.  If you are consistently late to pick up your child, they will no longer be allowed to stay after school.

We continue to be "The Forever First Forensics Team" for York County Elementary Schools!
