
WHAT IS READING RECOVERY? Reading Recovery is a program designed to help specially selected first/grade children who need additional assistance in learning to read. Students receive daily, 30 minute, individual reading and writing lessons.
Reading Recovery has been operating successfully in the York County School Division since 1996. The program is in place in five elementary schools: Dare, Magruder, Tabb, Yorktown, and Waller Mill.
WHAT ARE SOME IMPORTANT FEATURES OF READING RECOVERY?
Early intervention to prevent failure Tutoring in addition to classroom instruction Short-term acceleration, approximately 20 weeks or less Focus on the student's strengths Students learn strategies to help them become independent readers Students learn to predict, confirm, and understand what they read Student knowledge and performance guide instruction Daily writing activity aids in learning to read
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN READING RECOVERY? Reading Recovery is open to first grade children who are in need of extra help in readingand have been in school for about one year, having not been retained in grade one. Selection for Reading Recovery is based on recommendation by the teacher and performance on the Observation Survey, a test of reading and writing.
WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF THE READING RECOVERY PROGRAM?
Students who successfully complete Reading Recovery are expected to be able to read with the average readers in their classroom. These children are expected to become independent readers who enjoy reading and writing.
WHAT HELPS TO MAKE THE READING RECOVERY PROGRAM SUCCESSFUL?
The Reading Recovery Program places emphasis on reading for meaning. Students are taught to use several different ways of figuring out known words. These skills are applied when reading.
Parents are asked to take part by listening to their child read one or two books each evening. In addition, parents are asked to visit the school in order to watch their child read and write during a Reading Recovery lesson.
Parents are asked to be sure their child attends school each day so that no Reading Recovery lessons are missed.
WHAT IS A TYPICAL READING RECOVERY LESSON?
A typical 30 minute Reading Recovery lesson consists of the following:
Rereading familiar books Recording the running record on a previously introduced book
Learning how words work using magnetic letters
Writing activity Introduction and reading of a new book
