Make
reading fun! In
conjunction with the York County School Board Proclamation recognizing
March 3
as “Read Across America Day”, The York
County School
Board and the York Education Association (YEA) is sponsoring the
following
challenges. The theme this year is Team Up for Reading. Our good friend Dr.
Seuss is always a team player, but feel free to go beyond the cat and
explore how you and your children can team up and read!
1) To All the Teachers and
Principals of York County: Bring
in the volunteers! For each school that
accumulates 110 guest
and volunteer readers between Feb 3 and March 3
(yes, you can include the high school middle school students!),
a special award will be donated to
your media
center, along with public recognition of your school’s efforts at the
March 31
School Board meeting. To keep track of
the hours, the YEA will send a chart to each school.
2) To All the Students of York
County: Read with a younger
student! High Schoolers and Middle
Schoolers make time
to volunteer to read in your neighborhood elementary school. In addition, the York Public library is
asking for high school students to come in and read with children on
March 1
from 10:30-12:30 at the Tabb Public Library.
Each middle and high school will be aiming for 110 stories read
to
younger students and children, and these volunteer readings can count.
Elementary
students, there is good news for you, too! A
book trivia quiz will be available the week
of Feb 25 to March 3 to show off your “Team Up with Books” knowledge. Take the challenge and return completed forms
to the YEA for a chance to win prizes. A
drawing will be made from correct and completed trivia quizzes. The quiz will be offered to any
teachers/students through each building's YEA Rep or Carol Bauer, YEA
RAA chair
(Grafton Bethel Elementary).
3) To All the Senior Staff at the
School Board Office: The YEA
challenges you to spend 30 minutes
each week, between February 3 and March 3, reading with a child. Staff members can earn their stripes, a Dr.
Seuss hat, by going out in the classrooms and reading with students in
the
schools for a few minutes a week. And
for those who have already earned their stripes…there is other Dr.
Seuss gear
wear!
4)
. To All the Citizens of York County:
You are never too old, too wacky, too wild
to pick up
a book and read with a child! Make time
between February 3 and March 3 to read with a child at your home or
neighborhood
school.
