Elementary School Physical Education

Elementary School Physical Education

The objective of the Physical Education Program at Tabb Elementary is to provide fitness activities, sport skills, and active games, which are fun for the students.  Enjoyment of these activities will develop lifelong fitness skills and wellness.  The students of Tabb Elementary School meet for Physical Education twice a week.  We have found that hard work does produce results as our physical fitness scores have improved over the last several years.

We are very active in the Physical Education program at Tabb.

Our Kindergarten, first and second grades will be very busy this year with activities that include jumping rope, locomotor skills such as, walking, running, hopping, jumping and skipping.  Also, we will be practicing throwing, catching and kicking skills.  These skills will be taught and then applied in a game situation.  In addition to physical skills, the children will be practicing following teacher directions and learning how to move safely in our playing areas.

Our third, fourth and fifth graders work all year on physical fitness skills.  The students are tested twice a year on five Physical Fitness Tests.  These tests include:

Shuttle Run – measures agility

Curl Ups     -- measures abdominal strength

V-Sit           -- measures flexibility

Pull Ups      -- measures upper body strength

Mile Run     -- measures endurance running

The curriculum for the upper grades includes basic skills of throwing, catching and kicking.  These skills are then incorporated into active game situations.

Jump Rope has become a large part of the Physical Education program at Tabb.  We participate in Jump Rope for Heart in February as a school project.  All monies collected for Jump Rope for Heart goes toward research to help fight heart disease and stroke.  As a result of this program, we have a Jump Rope for Heart Demonstration Team that travels to other schools to promote the Jump Rope for Heart Program.  This team consists of fourth and fifth graders who are selected after they complete a jump rope program and who master specific jump rope skills.  In addition we also have a Jump Rope School Team.  This team will perform at school functions. Third and fourth graders may join the Jump Rope Club each year to learn the skills needed to possibly be selected for next year’s Jump Rope Teams.

The Jump Rope Club is comprised of third and fourth grade students.  In this Club the students learn jump rope skills with short and long ropes.  Also, we work on individual and partner skills, as well as double dutch jumping.  We all have fun as we learn these skills.  At the end of our club activities the students interested in becoming a member of the Jump Rope Team may be considered for selection for the next year’s team.

Our second grade students are involved in a Jump Rope Superstar Club.  To become a member, these students must be able to jump rope 100 times without stopping.  This is done in physical education class and once they have jumped 100 times they earn a star for the hallway.  The jumpers may jump in increments of 100 up to 1000.  Our Kindergarten and first grade students learn to jump a single rope and also a long single rope in order to prepare for the Jump Rope Superstar program in second grade.

As you can see we like to jump rope at Tabb!
