Dear Parent of a Fabulous 5th Grader!

We are very glad to have your child on our team this year.  Fifth grade is an exciting and challeging year.   During the year we hope you will notice your child becoming more independent and taking more responsibility.  It is our goal for your child to enjoy school and learning.  We try to make our daily lessons fun and meaningful.

Please contact us if you or your child have any concerns.  By discussing these concerns we hope to be able to make school a comfortable and safe place for your child.

Keeping in Touch

Because we are team teaching, communication with you is very important.  Every Friday we will send home class work your child has done and any review which may be needed.  Watch for the orange Friday Folder, look over the work, and sign and return the sheet in the folder on Mondays. Feel free to comment in the folder.  It is a good way to assure consistent communication on a weekly basis.  We will also send home interim reports and report cards every four weeks to let you know the progress your child is making.

If you ever have any questions, please do not hesitate to call, or e-mail.  If you’d like to conference, please call, send a note, or email so we can set up a time that will work best for both of us.

 Discipline Plan/Rules

Please keep the Student Handbook to refer to after reading and reviewing it with your child.

Our class rules are:

1.      Follow all directions.

2.      Treat yourself and others with respect.

3.      Give your best effort.

Our daily consequences are:

1st  Warning

2nd  Sign in the notebook-note in Friday folder

3rd    Time out & contact parent via note, email, or phone call

4th   Conference and/or time out in another class.

We will handle minor problems as they arise in our classrooms.  Occasionally, we may need to contact you if a serious problem occurs or if the problem is consistent.  Often your input helps us understand and resolve the situation.  By supporting each other, we can show your child that we are committed to helping them have a successful and enjoyable year.

We reward appropriate behavior in many ways.  Recognition o
f appropriate behavior may be shown both verbally or with a “treat”/privilege of some kind.

If at all possible, take our schedule into consideration when scheduling appointments.  It is harder to make up missed work because we are switching classes.  We like that Tabb parents are so involved with their children’s learning.  It is essential, however, that all adults always check in to the office upon entering, whether you are visiting a classroom, volunteering, picking up a child, or coming for a conference or program.  Please visit the office first to get your visitor sticker.

As a parent, we know that you will understand that we greatly value and protect every instructional moment.  During the school day, teachers cannot take time to chat, confer, or gather assignments.  Please make an appointment, call or send a note when you want to conference with the teacher.

Homework

Homework is an important part of the education experience, serving to:

Strengthen skills currently being taught
Increase learning
Provide enrichment opportunities
Promote creativity, responsibility, and independence
Develop good work and study habits

Responsibilities of teachers:

Assign homework appropriate for each student which focuses on reinforcement and strengthening of skills.
Assign some projects to complete at home to help wit skills, time management, and preparation for longer-term projects in middle school.
Provide written guidelines for long-range assignments and projects to help students in organizing their work and benefit parents in working with their children.
Review homework to provide feedback to students in a timely manner.
Make note of missing and/or incomplete assignments in the agenda or in the  “take home” folder.
Assign approximately no more than 45 minutes of homework per night.

Responsibilities of students:

Record assignments daily in the agenda.
Ask questions in class if unsure of an assignment
Take home necessary materials to complete the assignment
Complete homework neatly and accurately
Return homework daily
Schedule study time so that  projects and long term assignments are completed over a period of time

Responsibilities of parents:

Ensure adequate study time and that homework is completed nightly
Provide an atmosphere free from disruption; turn off the TV
Listen, show interest, and give support, but avoid doing the assignment for your child
Communicate regularly with the child’s teachers (Some parents choose to initial the agenda daily, but we don’t think this is necessary for most students unless there is a problem.)

Supplies

The following supplies are needed daily.  Check regularly to be sure your child has these every day in his/her binder, and replenish as needed.

loose-leaf wide ruled paper
ruler

pencil pouch for the binder

glue sticks

#2 pencils

scissors

pack of colored pencils
individual pencil sharpener
post-it notes

Your child will also be using a dictionary regularly at home.
