spelling, and communication skills sharp while school is out.
Practice with these month by month ideas.
June: Write
a thank-you note to this year's teacher. List
3 summer goals. Examples: Read 10 books, learn to swim,
keep my room clean. Start
a journal about your favorite summer activity (bike riding,
gardening). Add an entry each week.July: Write
a paragraph about how you celebrated Independence Day. In
the car, keep a list of all the state names you see on license plates. Invent
a new outdoor game, and write out the instructions on how to
play. For instance, combine jump rope and hopscotch to play
jumpscotch.August: Make
a guest list and create invitations for a cook out. Send
e-mails. Let family and friends know what you're doing each week. Practice
writing your full name, address, and telephone number. Label your
notebooks and other school supplies for the fall.Ideas compiled from the Reading Connection - May 2008 edition ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
A Big
Thank You to Our Partners in the Community! The
following
businesses and organizations provided services or goods to supplement
activities sponsored by the TES PTA. Thanks to continued support
from local business and community partnerships, we are able to make our
events and programs even better!
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() TAKE
A LOOK AT YOUR PTA ACCOMPLISHMENTS! Get ready to be
amazed…below are only some of the accomplishments of YOUR PTA
this year. The Spell-a-thon, our main
fundraiser, made it possible to do many
great things for the school! Your generous donations have supplemented
the
education of every student at
TES. Thank you to our parents and staff
who made this year a huge success. You
too can make a difference… and we will do our best to make sure you
have a fun
and rewarding experience! Look for new
opportunities next year! Received awards for
2007-2008 Model PTA, membership of more than 80%. Also Tabb PTA was
proud of
our very own Peninsula PTA Volunteer
of the Year, Chico Valdes. Reimbursed every Teacher
$100 and Para-educators $50 for out-of-pocket expenses. (This is only a
portion
of what they spend to supplement their classrooms!) Funding of $3,000
allowed the Cultural Arts Programs to provide a jump rope and fitness
specialist for an assembly and workshops, host the Virginia Aquarium's
Ocean in
Motion 3-day residency program, and invite author Suzanne Tate and
illustrator
James Melvin to be a part of our "Down by the Bay"
literacy celebration. Funded student folders
and agendas for every student, beautification of the school such as
flowers and
plants, a new thermometer and supplies for the clinic, funded a portion
of
Accelerated Reader, purchased books for the library, electric pencil
sharpeners
for the classrooms, flashlights for the classrooms, hats and prizes for
every
student during Dr.
Seuss week, magazines for parents to read while waiting in
the office, provided funding for math manipulative, PE trophies and
choral
awards. Provided each grade
level with $500 to be used by the teachers as they wish for educational
enhancement. Examples of how the money
was used include a field trip for 2nd and 4th grades, new AR books for
the 1st
grade, and new supplemental hands-on classroom materials for
Kindergarten. Hosted no additional
cost general membership and hospitality events such as the
Back-to-School Staff
Luncheon, Kindergarten Boo Hoo Breakfast,
Back-to-School Night, Spelling Bee
and Ice Cream Social, Magic of Nutrition, Jump Rope Team and Choral
Nights,

facilities. Also, TES donated over 300 lbs of canned and
nonperishable
foods to be used for those in need on the peninsula through the Food
Bank of
the VA Peninsula. PTA volunteers chaired

I would like to remind all parents and guardians that medications stored in the clinic need to be picked up before June 12. Medications left in the clinic will be disposed of per YCSD protocol. Rising 6th graders are required to have the Tdap booster immunization prior to starting school in the Fall. Please bring in a copy of the completed vaccination form. All students with medical care plans and/or Epi-pens need to renew their paperwork before starting school in the Fall. Please make an appointment with your physician as soon as possible to ensure completion of the paperwork before September 2nd. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Troop 1325 donates a bench to the new TES Learning Garden TES would like to thank Girl
Scout Troop 1325 for the generous donation of a beautiful bench for the
TES Learning Garden. The bench was given in
gratitude to the school for supporting the troop for the past five
years.
The bench symbolizes what the girls have received from Tabb Elementary and the Girl Scouts and each part of the bench has a symbolic meaning: The legs represent the foundation
that TES and the Girls Scouts have provided.
The back represents the support given to the girls. The slats represent the base which has prevented the girls from falling through the cracks. The flowers on the bench represent how the girls have bloomed. The butterfly on the bench represents the beautiful young ladies that have developed. The arms represent the support that their leaders, Jennifer Kennedy and Kathy Yevak, have given the girls. The bronze color represents the Bronze Award that the girls earned for painting the US map on the blacktop (the highest award the Junior Girl Scouts can receive). Compiled by 5th Grade Girl Scout
Casey Kennedy ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Staff Appreciation Week Teachers and staff at Tabb
Elementary School celebrated Staff Appreciation Week like movie stars
complete with a red carpet, stars on the hall floors for each staff
member, and “Walk of Fame” around the school. Other events
sponsored by the PTA in celebration of this special week included a
Panera breakfast, Chocolate fountain, and Tropical Smoothie Day (Thanks
Tabb parents, the Penlands, owners of Tropical Smoothie of Poquoson!).

of the teachers, parents, former students, military men and women and
other

Carnival such a fun time for all! The
blow up slides and speed pitch were a big
hit and everyone enjoyed yummy carnival food. A
big Kudos for a job well done goes to organizer Heather
Sabourin and
her team of Kathy Lebron, Cheryl Watson, Shannon Heisler, and Christy
Butterworth.
“Thank you” to ALL of
the volunteers that have made this event possible!! A special Thank You

Society from ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() TES Learning Garden Update If you have not seen it, you
have to check out Phase I of the Learning Garden!
Volunteers have installed and painted a shed, built six raised planter
beds, mulched the garden area, installed fencing, and planted flowers.
A team of employees from the Newport News Lowes, parents, students, and
Tabb teachers joined together to complete the work.
This project would not be a success without contributions from community partners. In addition to the $3,500 Lowe’s Grant, York County Wal-Mart has provided a grant of $1000, Peninsula Hardwood Mulch donated all of the mulch and compost, a shed to house supplies was donated by the Air Force, paint was supplied by Grafton True Value, Home Depot donated planting containers, Girl Scout Troop 1325 donated a bench, Taylor’s Do It Center donated a matching bench, and a sign announcing the garden was donated by Fast Signs of Kiln Creek. On May 16th, an official Learning Garden ribbon cutting took place. In attendance were Tabb Elementary students, Principal Cheryl Parr and Assistant Principal Jennifer Goodwin, teachers, Delegate Brenda Pogge, York County School Superintendent Dr. Steven Staples, School Board member Dr. Robert George, and representatives from Tabb Elementary PTA, Lowes, Wal-Mart, and Peninsula Hardwood Mulch. A Junior Master Gardener after school program, headed by Tabb parent Rob Yankoski, will be available to grades 3-5 students next year. Some activities and projects that may be incorporated into the Learning Garden include a native plant area, a vegetable garden, herb garden, kindergarten pumpkin patch, a colonial garden, compost station, and a cistern system to collect and recycle rainwater. In Phase II, amphitheater seating in the new reading area will allow students in all grade levels to enjoy outdoor reading and story telling during the long and pleasant fall and spring seasons that we enjoy here in Tidewater Virginia. A big thank you to all the parents and volunteers that have helped to make this garden a reality, especially Craig and Amy Nickol, Chico Valdes, Cheryl Watson, and Rob Yankowski. If you are interested in helping with garden, please contact Rob Yankoski . ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Down By
the Bay Night A big thank you to
the
1st and 2nd grade teachers for organizing a really fun night at TES. After a tasty seafood dinner provided by
Graham and Rollins, families enjoyed a musical performance by our very
own 1st
and 2nd graders. Some lucky families won
great door prizes. Author Suzanne Tate and Illustrator James Melvin of
the
Outer Banks brought their nature series books to life through fun
audience
participation. Also, thank you to Mr. T
for his hand in making this a memorable night for all who attended! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
