  1. Course Title: Algebra 1- Part 1

 

  1. Text(s): Algebra 1, Glencoe: Integration, Applications, Connections 

 

  1. Course Description:  This course is a study of applied basic algebraic concepts needed to solve algebraic equations. It is intended to provide algebra reinforcement at a modified pace. 

 

  1. Competencies: Upon completion of this course, you will be better able to do

                             the following:

a)      Work with variables and solve formulas

           b) Simplify expressions using algebraic properties

           c) Work with factors, multiples, and divisibility

           d) Perform basic operations with fractions

           e) Solve one-step, one-variable linear equations

           f) Simplify and solve equations with more than one variable

            g) Instill logical thinking in dealing with real world situations

I.                     First Quarter

 

Variables and Expressions

Exponents and Powers

Properties of Real Numbers

Operations with Real Numbers

Justification of Steps in Simplifying Expressions

Matrices

Scalar Multiplication

 

Division Math Assessment for quarter 1: 10/31-11/9 time frame.

DMA will count as a quiz grade.                                   

 

II.                  Second Quarter

 

Properties

Solving One-Step Equations

Solving Multistep Linear Equations with One or More Transformations

Literal Equations and Formulas

Ratios & Proportions

Problem Solving & Word Problems smester exam

Semester Grade: 1st quarter (40%) 2nd quarter (40%) exam (20%)

 

Course Requirements: Pencil, Textbook (supplied), notebook (three-ring binder with loose-leaf paper), notebook dividers, pencils, a simple four function calculator at the least..

Calculators: The calculator is an integral part of modern technology. Its proper use is essential. The recommended calculator for this course and those that follow is the Texas Instruments TI-83 or TI-84. 

 

7. Attendance Policy: To comply with Virginia Law, students are expected to attend school every day and to be on time unless there is illness or death in the immediate family.

 

8. Evaluation: Quiz/Test Average (40%)

Daily/Class Participation (25%)

 

9. Class Procedures:.

             Hall Passes:  Students will only be allowed to leave the room with a hall pass 5                                   

times during each quarter, so plan appropriately and use your 5 minutes between classes wisely.

Bathroom: The student must have an agenda. Hall passes will not be issued during the first 10 minutes of class or during lesson time.

Water: Use fountain outside room.  Not allowed during the first 10 minutes of class or during lesson time.

Lockers: Student must have agenda. Hall passes will not be issued during the first 10 minutes of class or during lesson time.

Homework/Classwork: assigned & checked daily, occasionally collected for accuracy check, seat checked or collected for completeness.

Preparedness:  must have all needed materials

Paper headings: every paper must have name, date, title, and assignment number if applicable. 

Make-up work: compensatory time will be given for make up work due to illness and/or emergency.          

 

A major component of the course is the regular use of group work, both in and out of the classroom. Lectures focus on  understanding the main concepts and applications of Algebra and de-emphasizing rote memorization and drill.

  

10. Class Expectations:

1)       Attend class regularly and be on time.

2)      Respect yourself, others, and all property.

3)      Bring all needed materials and assignments to class.

4)      Listen when others are speaking and participate fully in all activities.

5)      Obey all other school rules.

 

11.) Tutoring: Available with one day’s advanced notice.  A day’s notice is necessary to insure that I am available and to make sure you have arranged for a ride home. Rides should be here no later than 3:00pm
