Course Description:

In this course, students explore the history of art forms of a variety of selected cultures and incorporate the knowledge of indigenous art forms and techniques into individual works of art.  Student’s work with a diversity of materials, and the designs and surface embellishments of student work are intended to relate to and integrate various aspects (e.g. history, language, food, music) of the cultures being studied.

 

Course Requirements:

-         $10.00 art fee (full year) $5.00 (one semester) - paid ASAP, payable to BHS, check or cash, SHOW MRS. DUNN THE PINK RECIEPT!

-         Parent/guardian signed syllabus receipt

-         Pencil (brought to class every day)

-         Folder or binder

-         Your imagination and creativity

-          

Competencies:

-         Use the elements and principles of design in artwork.

-         Identify and understand different art media tools and definitions.

-         Demonstrate proficiency in creating artwork in a variety of media.

-         Prepare two dimensional and three dimensional works for display

-         Analyze art styles and historical contexts.

-         Effectively critique own and others works of art.

 

Evaluation:

Homework/quizzes = 10%

Class work = 40%

Projects = 50%

-         Projects will be graded according to:

o       Growth

o       Work Habits

o       Creativity/difficulty

o       Composition/design

o       Assignment criteria fulfilled (this varies from project to project)

-         Late work will have a 10-point deduction for each class period it is turned in late.

-         Late work will not be accepted 2 class periods past the due date.

-         Projects turned in with no name will receive a 10-point grade deduction.

 

Classroom Expectations:

-         Be on time, tardies are not accepted.

-         Stay in your assigned seat.

-         Be respectful, to yourself and others.

-         Listen to directions and be safe

-         Clean up after yourself and complete assigned clean-up duty.

o       Elements and principles review

o       Byzantine Repousse’

o       Wycinanki (Polish Paper Cutting)

o       Pysanky Eggs

o       Sand Mandala

-         Fourth Quarter:

o       Mehndi

o       Cultural Masks

o       Dutch Glass Painting

o       Japanese Kits

o       Paper Making

o       Book Binding

o       Final Portfolio

 

Attendance:

-         To comply with Virginia State Law, students are expected to attend school every day and be on time unless there is illness or death in the immediate family.

-         In the case of excused absences students will have the same number of missed classes to make up missed work (work not already completed in class must be completed on the student’s time, after school or at home).

-         In the case of unexcused absences students will not be granted extended time to complete work.

-         Grade deductions will be given at the rate of -10pts for every class day any assignment is turned in late.

 

Extra Bits:

-         If a student has accumulated 3 unexcused tardies or one truancy or exhibits inappropriate behavior in class all privileges will be suspended (i.e.: no bathroom/water passes).

-         All passes must be entered in the student’s agenda.  If the student is missing their agenda another may be purchased at the main office.  Borrowing of another students agenda is not acceptable.
