MRS. ANDERSON’S SOCIAL STUDIES CLASS

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all 8th graders and parents to Queens Lake Middle School.

I am very excited about all of the great things that we will accomplish this year. World Studies will be taught to my 8th grade students.

Eighth grade U.S. and World Studies will encompass all of the SOLs from 5th, 6th, and 7th grades in preparation for the SOL test in May 2008. This is a review and extension of the previous 3 years of Social Studies. Homework in this subject will be minimal if your child utilizes their classroom time effectively. The textbooks that we will use are: “World Geography Today” and “America History of Our Nation”. They will be issued the geography book. The history book will be provided for school use only.

Materials needed for this class are:

-         a constant supply of pencils

-         a constant supply of paper

The grading breakdown for U.S. and World Studies is:

-         50% class work

-         50% tests

The York County grading scale is as follows:

                                      100 – 92   A

                                       91 – 84    B

                                       83 – 75    C

                                       74 – 67    D

                                       66 – 0      F

My e-mail address is sanderson@ycsd.york.va.us . My telephone number at school is 258-7660. You will get my voice mail during student hours. Please feel free to use these as a source of communication. Your e-mail address would also be helpful as a source of communication. Please be assured that your addresses will be confidential and not shared with anyone without your approval. I would also like you to know that I will make every attempt to respond to all communications within one to two days.

I know that you have certain expectations as to how the year should go. Please let me communicate mine to you as I would welcome yours.

1. The student comes to class prepared to learn by being well rested.

2. The student’s behavior conforms to the student handbook at all times.

3. The student has all of the necessary supplies (i.e. textbook, pencils and paper).

4. The student communicates any problem to me at the earliest possible time. Problems many times are kept at a minor level if caught early enough.

5. All homework is to be turned in when due. The only exceptions are for illness or vacations pre-arranged through the administration. If you know that your child will take time for reasons other than these, they should either turn in the work prior to the day off or the very 1st day they return to class. I do not take late work except in extreme cases such as illness or family emergency.

After school help is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  I will stay upon request for extra help. Your child may ride the after school bus home at 4:00.

Please remember that I want to see your child succeed as much as you do.  Once again, I look forward to a great learning year!

Sincerely,

Sharon A. Anderson
