Who: Gates Millenium Scholars
What: Scholarship program funded by Bill Gates especially for low-income, minority students
How much: 1,000 scholarships-Full cost of attendance- (renewable)
Criteria: Must be a minority and must demonstrate significant financial need. Student must have a GPA of at least a 3.3 and have demonstrated leadership abilities thru extracurricular activities and/ or community service.
Deadline: Apply online by January 11, 2008

Who: Newport News Elks Lodge in conjunction with Elks National Foundation    
What: Most Valuable Student Scholarship Contest
How much: 500 different awards totaling over $2,000,000 will be disbursed.
Criteria: Leadership exp, financial need,academics,& essay are all req'd components of app.
Deadline: January 9, 2009

Who: Wal-Mart/ Sam's Club Foundation
What: Sam Walton Community Scholarship
How much: $1000.00
Criteria: No employees or dependents of employees are eligible to apply.

Who: Micron Technology Foundation
What: Micron Science & Technology Scholars Program, scholarships and high adventures for the serious science student
How much: One $55,000 scholarship and up to twelve of $16,500
Criteria: SAT score of at least 1350 or ACT of 30, unweighted GPA of 3.5, demonstrated leadership in school, plan to major in computer science, physics, chemistry, material sciences or engineering.

Who: Mensa Foundation
What: Annual Mensa Education and Research Foundation Essay Contest
How much: Ranges from $400-$2,000
Criteria: Anyone with US citizenship or legal residence who is enrolled at any level in a degree program at an accredited US institution of post-secondary education for fall 2008.

Who: Lee-Jackson Scholarship
What:
Scholarships will be awarded to juniors and seniors submitting the best essays on the career, character, or some other aspect of the life of either General Lee or General Jackson, or both.
How much:
In each of Virginia’s eight regions, three students will receive a $1,000 scholarship, and one of the three students will receive an additional $1,000 bonus scholarship for the best essay in the region. In addition, a bonus scholarship of $8,000 will be awarded for the best essay statewide.
Criteria:
Any junior or senior in a Virginia public or private high school or home school may apply. The student should not have received a Lee-Jackson scholarship in the past and must be a resident of Virginia who plans to attend an accredited four-year college or university in the United States as a full-time student. Students who intend to enroll in a community college must plan to enroll in the college transfer program of the community college. The contestant should demonstrate the natural ability to succeed in college and have a sincere desire to attend. Financial need is not a requirement.
Deadline:
The deadline for students to submit applications and essays to their principals is January 16,2009.  Each high school principal will choose the best two essays from his/her students and forward the chosen essays to Phyllis Milne, Ed.D., Associate Director of Curriculum and Student Achievement, by January 30, 2009.  Program information and the student application are located on the Lee Jackson web site at http://www.lee-jackson.org.

Who: American Society of Military Comptrollers
What: Hampton Roads Chapter Scholarship
How much: 3-$1,500 1st place $1,000 2nd place $500 3rd place
Criteria: TWO GHS seniors can be nominated.  Completed application includes HS transcript, an essay, two letters of recommendation. Students should have outstanding academic achievment and in need of financial assistance pursuing a degree in a financial/resource management related field.
Deadline: January 15, 2009

What: APA's High School Essay Contest
How much: Two winners-$5,000 each Ten Honorable Mentions-$100 gift certificate to APA's PlanningBooks.com
Criteria: High School Juniors or Seniors.  Essay Topic: Develop a Historic Preservation Plan for your community.
